From “Life of the Beloved” by Henri Nouwen

I Am the Chosen Child of God

We are God’s chosen ones, even when our world does not choose us. The world is manipulative, controlling, power-hungry, and destructive. It tells you many lies about who you are… When you feel hurt, offended, or rejected, say this:

These feelings, strong as they be, are not telling me the truth about myself. The truth, even though I cannot feel it right now, is that I am the chosen child of God, precious in God’s eyes, called Beloved from all eternity, and held safe in an everlasting embrace.

1 John 3:1 – 3 Amplified Bible

1 See what an incredible quality of love the Father has shown to us, that we would [be permitted to] be named and called and counted the children of God! And so we are!
For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, we are [even here and] now children of God, and it is not yet made clear what we will be [after His coming]. We know that when He comes and is revealed, we will [as His children] be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is [in all His glory]. 3 And everyone who has this hope [confidently placed] in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure (holy, undefiled, guiltless).

Always Praising
A man was converted some years ago, and he was just full of praise. He was living in the light all the time. He used to preface everything he said in the meeting with “Praise God!”

One night he came to the meeting with his finger all bound up. He had cut it, and cut it pretty bad, too. Well, I wondered how he would praise God for this; but he got up and said:

“I have cut my finger, but, praise God, I didn’t cut it off!”

If things go against you, just remember they might be a good deal worse.

From “The Bushman’s Guide” by W. Arnold Long

In the North Coast districts of New South Wales a bullock-driver was once prosecuted for using obscene language. He pleaded “not guilty”, but the magistrate had other ideas.

“It may be possible to be a swearless soldier, but a biblical bullocky, never!” So the verdict went against the bullock-driver!!

But even a magistrate may be mistaken. A Queensland bullock-driver learned a secret unknown to the men of the world. He lived a true and clean Christian life, even when driving the obstinate bullock teams. Some of his acquaintances enquired as to how he could do this. With a beautiful smile he touched his lips and pointed upward and said, “I trust”.

In his own strength he could not live this for a single day.

There is an old hymn, which says, “It is not try, but trust.”

We have our own part to play in everything, but without God we can do nothing to save ourselves or keep our lives pure. The arm of a tramcar brings power to the motors that throb underneath. Without that power they are lifeless and useless.

To trust God is to bring all the fullness of His power into a life that is otherwise weak and sinful and spiritually helpless. A little child trusts its parents for everything. Surely we can trust God just as much.

From “The Australian Bushman’s Guide” from W. Arnold Long

In a little township in Western New South Wales, a very old man once sent for visiting missionaries. He was deeply disturbed and wanted to talk to them about things which were weighing heavily on his mind. We found that he had been a drover and could, no doubt, have told many stories of hardship and adventure from his past. But these did not concern him any longer. He had before him the greatest journey of all.

He said, “I’ve come a long way on the journey, and I haven’t got much further to go. I don’t know which way to go and I want to know the right way.”

What message could the outside world give to a man in such a strait? Would politics or anything else of the affairs of this world be of any help or interest?

We thought of the great old words of John’s Gospel, and said to him, “Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life: no man comes unto the Father but by Me!” After some conversation under difficulties (he was mostly deaf), we gave him an illustration: “Suppose you owed £50 at the store and I went and paid it for you and gave you the receipt. What would there be left for you to do?”

“I suppose to thank you for it.”

“Yes. Now we are all in debt. We are all sinners.”

“Oh yes, we are all sinners alright.”

And God said, “The soul that sins, it shall die.”

“Yes.”

We could not pay the debt ourselves, but Christ came and paid it for us. He took our place and died for us.

“Yes.”

Well, now that Christ has paid the debt for us, what is there left for us to do?”

After a few minutes earnest thought, he replied, “I suppose to thank Him for it.”

And did you ever do that?”

”No.”

“Well what about doing it now?”

Again there was a brief interval of silent thought. Then the snow-white head bowed low. For the first time in his life the old man lifted both heart and voice in prayer, thanking God for sending His eternal Son into the world to die for him: to pay even his debt to the uttermost and thus to set him free!.”

(From “Simple Sermons on the Seven Churches of Revelation” by W. Herschel Ford)

A backslidden member of Phillips Brooks church came and asked that his name be dropped from the roll. Dr. Brooks told him that this was a serious step, but the man was insistent. Just then a poorly dressed boy came to the door, bringing a note for the preacher. Dr. Brooks read the note and then said to the man, “This is a note from a poor woman who needs help. I am going out to conduct a funeral, you go with the boy and supply the needs of this home, and then I will talk to you about removing your name from the church roll.” The man agreed and followed the boy to a poor home, where he found a sick and half-blind woman in bed. “Oh, Dr. Brooks,” she said, “I am so glad that you have come. You are God’s man. You always help the poor. I need food and medicine, but first I want you to please pray for me.”

This man hadn’t prayed in years, but he dropped upon his knees and prayed first for himself and then for the woman. She knew by his voice that he was not Dr. Brooks. She did not know who he was, but as he prayed the fires of devotion began to burn again in his own heart. When he ended the prayer, he said, “My dear woman, I am not Dr. Brooks. I am the most worthless Christian in Boston. Dr. Brooks is conducting a funeral and he sent me here to help you. But how you have helped me! What do you need?”

Soon the man went out and brought back everything that the woman needed. With a heart singing with joy he went back to Dr. Brooks and said, “Pastor, I don’t want my name dropped from the roll. I’m all right now, I’m all right now.”
