Ordinary Sunday 12A: “Søren Kierkegaard wrote that ‘purity of heart is to will one thing’, which does not mean becoming narrow or self-righteous. To pray ‘unite my heart’ is not to ask for a smaller heart, but a truer one: a heart less divided by fear, rivalry or resentment; a heart gathered toward God’s mercy.”

Ordinary Sunday 12A: “Nurture is patient work: making room for grief, truth, understanding, accountability and growth. It does not mean protecting one another from every disagreement or pretending that harmful histories do not exist. Our traditions carry treasured wisdom, but also patterns of trauma, exclusion, colonial power, patriarchy and doctrinal arrogance …

“Nurture means water, safety and a future for Hagar and Ishmael. For us too, loving-kindness toward all God’s children takes practical form. A Uniting Church nurtures not only those who are already secure, but notices and sustains life at the edge.”

“Jesus knows the disciples will learn how to share the good news by going out and discovering the goodness and kindness of others.
 
“That is why he tells them not to pack large suitcases or carry much money. He wants them to depend upon the hospitality of others—to trust the goodness and kindness of strangers, while also discovering their own.”

“Mercy that listens before it judges. Mercy that makes room for another voice. Mercy that keeps the rhythm of justice without losing the melody of grace.
 
“May Christ’s mercy become our mercy.”

Ecumenical Service, St Joseph’s Church, Merimbula: “In today’s gospel (Matthew 9:9-13) Jesus alarms the guardians of religious purity. He sits at the wrong table, with the wrong people.
 
“But he is not abandoning the music of God.
 
“He is playing its deepest theme: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ Mercy over religious correctness without compassion. Love over mere performance—playing the notes without feeling, without communicating.
 
“The music—the song—is the good news of a nonviolent kingdom that challenges all social structures built on domination.”
