Christian asked Hopeful, “What finally broke you from your guilt and shame?”

Hopeful replied, “Your good friend Faithful told me, ‘Unless you can obtain the righteousness of a man that had never sinned, all of the good deeds that I ever did could never save me.”

Christian said, “And did you ask him what man this was?”

Hopeful responded, “Yes, he told me his name was Jesus.”

Many today blame the church for their unbelief. "The church hurt me." "Christians are hypocrites." While the church is often guilty of worldliness and sin, this is usually not the real issue.

More often, the church is blamed because the testimony of Jesus exposes sin. Men do not want Christ to reign over them or define right and wrong. They want God on their own terms.

This was true in Jesus' own ministry. Multitudes followed Him, only to turn away when His teaching offended them. Jesus was not to blame; their hearts were.

When people reject the testimony of Christ in the church, the church may simply be the occasion that exposes what was already in the heart.

The presence of Jesus—not merely the failures of His people—is often what the world finds most offensive..

“From all of this I came to understand that I must look for righteousness in His person. I realized that the satisfaction for my sins came to me through His blood.

What He did in obedience to His Father’s law, and in submitting to its attending penalty, was not for Himself, but for one like me who will accept it for his salvation.

As a result of my meditation, my heart and my affections overflowed with love for the Name, people, and ways of Jesus Christ.”

Hopeful: “I continued praying until the Father showed me his son.”

Christian: “And how was he revealed to you?”

Hopeful: “ I did not see him with my bodily eyes, but with the eyes of my understanding. One day I was very sad, I think sadder than at any one time in my life. This sadness was through a fresh sight of the how great my sin was and how far I had fallen.

Suddenly, in my spirit, I saw the Lord Jesus looking down from heaven and saying, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.’”

But I replied, “Lord, I am a great sinner.”

He answered, “My grace is sufficient for you.”
