According to government and research data, over 3.3 million Australians are currently living in poverty — that’s more than 1 in 8 people. Cost-of-living pressures are the biggest cause of stress for consumers, with the cost of affordable housing being the top concern in 2025, closely followed by food costs — meaning vulnerable Aussies are at breaking point.
Our weekly community lunch aims to alleviate some of this pressure by providing some relief from the cost of a meal, in a welcoming space with caring people providing friendship and support. Volunteers are a big part of putting this meal together, but without Red Shield Appeal funds, we would be looking at empty plates.

When you add it all up, a lot goes into the work the Waverley Salvation Army does in our community. But, what it all boils down to is PEOPLE - people caring enough to make a difference. People who volunteer, people who organise, people who partner with us, people running local businesses, people who refer others to our services, people who walk alongside those who are struggling, people who encourage and people who support us with donations.

We couldn’t do what we do without people like these – and people like you!

This is a great moment to acknowledge the work of Graeme – better known as “Moose” – for the incredible work he does to support our local community. He works at the frontline with people in need, not only helping with their immediate needs, but also working behind the scenes on special projects with partner organisations to find solutions to some of the problems our community members are facing. We are immensely proud of the work Moose does through Waverley Salvation Army and the way he serves his community with the love of Jesus. When Aussies say “Thank God for the Salvos” – this is who we have to be thankful for. God bless you Moose!

• Assisted more than 228,500 people and provided nearly 1.75 million sessions of care to people in need
• Provided over $24.1 million in financial assistance to people in need
• Assisted more than 38,000 people at risk of or facing homelessness, and provided over 1.4 million meals to those who accessed homelessness services
• Assisted nearly 11,000 people with financial counselling via Moneycare financial services
• Assisted more than 42,000 jobseekers look for employment
