DAY 40 – THURSDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER

What a beautiful journey we’ve been on! I feel like we echo the very words of Isaiah, that we have seen the Lord, high and exalted; we have heard his voice and sensed the promptings of the Holy Spirit. We have felt his presence in these days as we have stopped, listened and reflected on all that God is saying to us. I wonder what God has been saying to you? I hope you have written it down. I encourage you to share with the church community and witness to what the Lord has been whispering to you.

When Isaiah is captivated by a vision, he sees angels flying around, calling out to one another, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.” Then Isaiah is heartbroken by his own sinfulness, but through repentance, the Lord comes and takes away his sin and guilt. This reminds me of a powerful image of what Jesus does for us through the cross, when he bled and died for our salvation.
And so at the end of this journey (or should I say the start of a new journey?) there is really only one proper response to have.

Collectively as a church we choose to live out the words of Isaiah 6:8: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I, send me!’” Send us Lord. Send us out into the highways and byways of our community, reaching people with the love of Jesus; And one by one we will witness lives being forever changed by the love of Jesus Christ.

Prayer Action Questions:
As you reflect on this prayer journey, I wonder:
• What has the Lord been saying to you?
• How will your life be different because of this?
• What is your deep passion for Waverley Salvation Army in the days ahead?

Prayer:
Lord, we are so thankful. We have been on a memorable journey of faith together as a church. We praise you for all that you have been doing in our hearts. Thank you for all that you have done in our lives and we believe, with great anticipation, that the best days are still ahead for us, in Jesus’ name!

Becoming a Disciple-Making Church

Is there someone in your life who, regardless of the conversation,
always has to have the last word? This can often be viewed as a need to be right, but some psychologists suggest that it is less about an individual’s need to be correct, and more about their emotional need for closure without ambiguity. Today’s scripture includes the last recorded words of Jesus before his ascension to the Father. There is little room for ambiguity in his final words to his followers: “Go and make disciples of all nations…and you can be sure that I am always with you”.

Jesus’ final words include both an instruction and a promise. The prospect of being a disciple-maker can, at times, feel overwhelming and it is easy to question our own capacity to fulfill this task. Be assured, God has equipped each of us with a set of unique skills designed to make disciples in unique ways. His assurance that he is always with us applies not only to us as individuals, but also to our corps.

Prayer Action Questions:
• Does the prospect of going and making disciples seem overwhelming to you?
Ask God for the courage to step out in faith.
• Where in your day to day activities, could God be providing you with opportunities to ‘go and make disciples’?
• Is God revealing to you new opportunities for our corps to make disciples?

Prayer:
Thank you Lord that, in those moments where your call to make disciples seems hard, we can hang on to the promise that you are always with us. We want our corps to be a disciple-making church; a place where we see people commit their lives to you. Help us to be open to the role you would have us play in seeing your Kingdom grow in this place. Amen

By the Lord's grace, I serve Jesus as an evangelist in the city streets, meeting many people from all walks of life. Underneath our differences, God’s love reminds me of what we once had in common — a time when our hearts rebelled against Him, being unfaithful to His love.

While I am preaching, the Holy Spirit gives me words to challenge people’s hearts:
"It is easy to say God is love and he loves you... and He is and He does! But why does your heart still reject Him, and Jesus, whom God in His love sent to be your Saviour? This is a spiritual contradiction in your heart to ponder."

Brothers and sisters, the words we speak come out of the abundance of our hearts, so our divine common language should be: seeking His will in prayer, then sharing God’s love through our gifts and ways of living. As we do this, we will bring His Light with gentleness to a broken world, one through which we once travelled, so Jesus will be honoured beyond borders and for all eternity.

Prayer Action Questions:
Let’s reflect in prayer to:
• Use our gifts and ways of living for God’s purpose.
• Sharpen our spiritual sensitivity to hear the Holy Spirit’s voice.
• Step out in faith when prompted to share the Gospel.

Prayer:
Our heavenly Father, I honour You with a humble heart. In Your presence, I ask You to help me pour out my heart for those who still don’t know You, and guide me to step out in faith according to Your will. In Jesus' name, Amen.

When we actively share the good news of Jesus, we are on the front foot, stepping into battle – Hallelujah! At Waverley Salvos, we celebrate as people are saved, give their lives to follow Jesus and become his disciples. We are The Salvation Army. Our message is based on the Bible. Our ministry is motivated by the love of God. Our mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in his name without discrimination .

We’re an Army in purpose and form, but an Army without physical weapons of war. We’re “not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” Eph 6:12 NLT.

Since we are taking the fight to a spiritual enemy, we must be equipped to fight spiritually – Ephesians 6:10-18 tells exactly what is needed – the full armour of God: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation and the Word of God as our weapon. These are absolutely essential as spiritual protection for ourselves and to prepare us to fight for the salvation of others.

Prayer Action Questions:
In Ephesians 6:18, Paul exhorts us to, “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep praying for all the Lord’s people.”
• Remind your spirit to keep an active conversation open with the Holy Spirit today.
Start with the prayers and requests you have on your heart right now.
• Ask God to cover you in his armour and help you to be alert to your spiritual mission.
• Pray for Godly people that you know are facing difficult battles.

Prayer:
Father God, thank you for trusting me to be part of your Salvation Army. Prepare me in every way for the spiritual battles I face for you and guide me daily on your mission to advance the Kingdom of God. Lord, my prayer and commitment for Waverley Salvation Army and for myself is that wherever there is hardship or injustice, we will live, love and fight, alongside others, to transform our city one life at a time with the love of Jesus. Amen.

You may have seen a little story about anybody, somebody and nobody. Anybody could have done it and thought somebody would do it. Somebody thought anybody could do it but in the end nobody did it. Sometimes, I think we as Christians understand that anybody can share the gospel, but we feel underprepared or un-skilled and we leave for somebody far more qualified.

BUT God calls us ALL to share His good news and not only that, He calls us to go into the world (our own community) to share His message. In today’s reading we see that when Jesus came to His disciples after His resurrection he firstly granted them peace and then instructed them that as the Father had sent Him, he was sending out his disciples. This is what we are asked to do today, to go into the world. Jesus breathed on them and told them they will receive the Holy Spirit. That is our prayer today that Jesus would send us out to proclaim His gospel with the power of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer Action Questions:
• What is the Lord asking of you today?
• Where is God directing you to share His gospel?
• What is your response to His calling?

Prayer:
Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you came to save us. We thank you for your love, your faithfulness and the blessings that we have experienced over the last 40 years in this church. Today we ask for your Holy Spirit to come again and fill us with courage and righteous zeal to go out into our community and share the gospel story. Praise be to the Father, thank you Jesus, Amen.

“Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

Not long ago, during the Red Shield Appeal, as I stood in the bustling heart of Glen Waverley, I felt deeply grateful for Melbourne’s vibrant multicultural harmony. Here, safety and prosperity abound. Yet, watching the hurried crowd, I noticed a striking contrast: despite living in an affluent and highly educated community, few faces carried smiles or genuine joy. This sparked a deep reflection in me on the nature of modern success. External stability cannot guarantee internal peace.

When life becomes a relentless cycle driven by societal demands, people often mistake busyness and external achievements for life’s true purpose, leaving behind weary souls. Such an environment highlights a quiet spiritual paradox. Human fulfillment requires more than material security; it demands a higher anchor. True, enduring joy does not stem from status or wealth, but from walking in the source of the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Amidst the rushing crowd, I am reminded once again of how deeply we need divine grace, life’s purpose, and inner light.

Prayer Action Questions:
• As a member of the Salvation Army, do I—and how do I—demonstrate Christ’s love in the community through "practical actions"?
• In my daily prayers, am I fulfilling the calling of His servant—standing in the gap to intercede for the spiritual peace, restoration, and salvation of the people of Monash?

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for abundantly blessing the City of Monash and the wider region. Yet, Lord, so many here still do not know You. As a member of the Salvation Army, I stand in the gap today to pray to You. We ask that You soften hearts, open spiritual eyes and ears, awaken a deep hunger for Your truth across our community, and win back lost souls. Empower us to be Your true light and salt. Win the hearts and minds of everyone in this city, bringing Your divine peace, joy, and eternal hope into every life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Year 12 was a time in my life when I disliked studying the most, and as a result, I didn't get into my ideal university. It was during that period that I came to know Jesus. He helped me understand that a student's duty is to be responsible, and that studying was a responsibility entrusted to me by Him. Relying on His guidance, I began to adjust my attitude towards my studies, worked hard, and successfully completed my education.

After entering the workforce, I gradually shifted my focus to my career and personal plans. I forgot to rely on God in all things and neglected to draw near to Him regularly. It wasn't until I encountered a bottleneck in my career that I returned to God, surrendering my work and life to Him, allowing Him to take the helm of my life. Looking back now, I realise that God had never left. He has been sovereign over my life, guiding me through different seasons and adjusting my steps.

As Acts 17:28 says, "For in him we live and move and have our being." Whether in our studies, our workplaces, or any stage of life, He is always with us. Both campus life and workplace responsibilities are inseparable from our faith; they are the very places where God shapes our lives.

Prayer Action Questions:
• Do we truly believe that, "in Him we live and move and have our being," or do we rely more on our own abilities?
• God delights in people seeking Him. In our schools and workplaces, are we equally willing to introduce the Creator of all things to others?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being a loving and faithful God who delights in being present in every moment of our lives. We reverently bring our campus and workplace lives before You. Please teach us how to glorify Your name through our studies and our work. Make us Your witnesses, so that those who do not yet know You may seek You and come to know You. For You are the God who creates life and longs to draw near to Your people. We pray in the victorious name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
