WHAT'S NEW AT THE BOOK CENTRE
Abba Dorotheos of Gaza: Practical Teaching on the Christian Life
A 6th Century Christian Monastic Classic
By Prof. Constantine Scouteris with the blessing of Saint Porphyrios Kafsokalyvia

The teachings of Abba Dorotheos of Gaza present a profound challenge to the contemporary world. Modern life, shaped by comfort and the pursuit of material wealth, often diminishes our capacity to perceive the spiritual value of asceticism, disciplined labour, and simplicity of life. In many respects, there is a tendency to accommodate the Gospel to our own preferences and worldly priorities, rather than allowing it to transform us.

Consequently, the witness of a holy figure such as Abba Dorotheos who devoted his life to the faithful teaching of the Gospel and to the cultivation of unconditional love for God, for one’s neighbour, and for all creation can appear difficult to receive and embrace in its fullness.

G.O.A.A BOOK CENTRE TRADING HOURS FOR ΜΕΓΑΛΗ ΕΒΔΟΜΑΔΑ

Holy Week is a deeply moving journey that invites the faithful to walk step by step with Christ through suffering, sacrifice, and ultimately, resurrection. Each day carries a solemn weight, drawing attention to themes of humility, betrayal, forgiveness, and unwavering love. These services are rich with symbolism—darkened churches, flickering candles, and ancient hymns that echo the sorrow and hope woven through the story.

What stands out most is the gradual transformation from grief to joy. The heaviness of Great Friday, marked by mourning and reflection on Christ’s crucifixion, gives way to the radiant and brilliant celebration of Pascha. This transition is not sudden but earned, experienced through prayer, stillness, and contemplation. It mirrors the human experience of enduring hardship before renewal.

Holy Week ultimately reminds us that suffering is not the end of the story. It calls for patience, faith, and trust in the promise of new life. The joy of Easter feels deeper and more meaningful because it is preceded by this sacred journey—one that invites each person to reflect on their own struggles and the hope of transformation beyond them.

From our Book Centre's family to yours, we wish you a Καλή Ανάσταση!

As we journey through Great Lent in the Orthodox Church, this sacred season invites us into deeper reflection, repentance, and renewal. This Lenten fast reminds us that prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are not simply traditions, but spiritual practices that draw us closer to God and to one another. Through prayer we seek God with humility, through fasting we learn self-discipline and gratitude, and through almsgiving we open our hearts to care for those in need. In this way, our Lenten journey becomes not only personal, but also a shared calling to strengthen our community in faith, love, and compassion as we prepare for the joy of Pascha.

As Saint John Chrysostom teaches us: “Do you wish to honour the body of Christ? Do not neglect Him when He is naked. Do not honour Him here in the church building with silken garments while outside you leave Him suffering from cold and nakedness.” May this holy season inspire us to pray with sincerity, fast with purpose, and give with generous hearts.

LENTEN AND PASCHAL THEMED BOOKS 📚

These titles and many others introduce lessons to children to the seasons of Lent and Pascha, helping them understand why Christians prepare their hearts for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Lent is a special time in the Church when believers slow down, pray more, and try to grow closer to God. During this season, Christian’s practice prayer, kindness, forgiveness, and self-control so their hearts are ready to celebrate the great joy of Pascha, when we remember that Jesus rose from the dead and brought life and hope to the world.

Through simple explanations, stories, and activities, children are invited to explore these important ideas in ways they can easily understand. They may listen to meaningful stories, reflect on ways to help others, and learn that small actions—such as saying a prayer, sharing with a friend, or helping at home—can show love for God and for those around them.

These experiences help children see that Lent is not only about giving something up, but also about growing in love, faith, and compassion

From foundational lessons about the Orthodox Faith's view on mental health to Spiritual theology, all can be found at our Archdiocese Book Centre

The importance of mental health in the Orthodox Church is rooted in the belief that each person is created in the image and likeness of God and called to wholeness in Christ. Following the compassionate example of Jesus Christ, the Church recognises that emotional and psychological struggles are real aspects of human life that require understanding, not judgment. Healthy mental well-being allows us to participate more fully in prayer, worship, family life, and service within the community. Through the sacraments, pastoral care, supportive fellowship, and when needed, professional counselling, the Church seeks to nurture the healing of mind, body, and soul in communion with God.

In the life of the Orthodox Church, Great Lent is not merely a season of dietary change, but a sacred journey of repentance, humility, and a return to God. As we prepare to celebrate the radiant Resurrection of our Lord, we follow the example of Christ Himself, who fasted forty days in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1–11). Fasting, as taught by our Church, is a spiritual medicine: it softens the heart, quiets the passions, and makes room for prayer, mercy, and love. By embracing the Lenten fast with sincerity and obedience, we do not simply give up certain foods — we offer our whole selves to God
