*Authentic Christian Ministry*
_Lesson 10_
_Memory Text: 2 Corinthians 4:8-10_
*Introduction*
*SABBATH*: The gospel minister’s work demands humility, simplicity, & sincerity. These were vital traits Paul possessed. We learnt last week that he defended himself against charges of inconstancy & lack of love towards the Corinthians. He always worked for their best interest. From 2 Cor. 2:12-17 to chapter 7, Paul shares key truths where he reflects on authentic ministry in Christ (2 Cor. 3-7). To win souls & to be godly marks the life of a true gospel minister (AA, p. 328).
*Fruits of an Authentic Ministry*
*SUNDAY*: Paul didn’t rely on letters of recommendation to be credible but the Spirit’s transformative power in the lives of the Corinthians. He wasn’t involved in self-promotion (2 Cor. 3:1-9, 1 Cor. 2:2). He contrasts the old covenant depicted by Moses & the new represented by him & his mates (2 Cor. 3:1-4:6). Both gave salvation (Gal. 3:8, 2 Tim. 1:9). While the Corinthians believed Paul, making his ministry one of righteousness, unbelief towards Moses made his ministry one of condemnation. To Paul, reactions to the gospel make some saved & others lost (2 Cor. 2:15).
*Suffering and Glory*
*MONDAY*: Let gospel ministers who feel they are suffering hardships visit the workshop of the apostle Paul. He felt hard-pressed on every side, but he was willing to carry "in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus" would be manifested in him (2 Cor. 4:7-18). John Huss argued that Christ suffered; hence, we’re partakers of His sufferings (GC, p. 105). The present life is mingled with death, but in the future glory there’s no death (Rev. 20:14, 21:4, 2 Cor. 4:15). One day, our “earthly house” (mortal body) shall be the “building from God” (resurrected body) (2 Cor. 5:1-10).
*Christ-focused Ministry of Reconciliation*
*TUESDAY*: Paul knew that he’d have to account for his ministry to Christ & was motivated by a deep reverence & love for Him (2 Cor. 5:11-15, Deut. 10:12). His focus was not on himself but on Christ. He boasted only in the cross & bid the Corinthians to take pride in his Christ-centered ministry of reconciliation (Gal. 6:14, 2 Cor. 12:9, 5:12). This means that through Jesus' atoning death, God has restored humanity to Himself. We’re to share this reconciliation message with others, as Christ’s ambassadors (2 Cor. 5:16-21, Col. 1:19-23, Eph. 2:13-16).
*Call to Holiness*
*WEDNESDAY*: A true follower of God will meet hardships but will triumph. Paul in short lists difficult situations, virtues of character, tools used in ministry, & the ups & downs of his work (2 Cor. 6:3-10). He then appealed for the Corinthians to live a holy life & avoid what’s unclean (2 Cor. 6:14-17). He stressed the need for love & holiness within the church (2 Cor. 6:11-7:1). His 6 appeals show that a holy God wants a holy life; separation from idolatry. Paul also lists 7 promises of God in 2 Cor. 6:16-17, 18). In all, God is the one who helps us to be holy.
*Comfort and Joy*
*THURSDAY*: Paul’s painful letter to the Corinthians yielded the repentance it was intended (2 Cor. 7). The Corinthians “sorrowed in a godly manner”, which leads to salvation. This gave joy to the hearts of Paul & his colleagues. The gospel ministers had deep affection for their spiritual children in Corinth & were glad to receive such love in return (2 Cor. 7:3; 6:11). That’s, churches can bring much joy to the hearts of their ministers. This relief & comfort was due to Titus’s positive report, but ultimately God is the agent of Paul’s comfort (2 Cor. 1:3-4, 7:9-11).
*Further Thought*
*FRIDAY*: In "The Message Heeded" from The Acts of the Apostles, Ellen G. White discusses Paul's severe letter to the Corinthians, in which he spoke of his joy upon hearing about their repentance. This reflects the authenticity of Paul's ministry & the value of reconciliation with God. She alerts us that as a church, we have been given the ministry of reconciliation to share God's love with the world. Once reconciled, believers are encouraged to seek holiness & grow into strong, committed Christians dedicated to advancing God's kingdom.

*Keywords*
_The Old Covenant- It is used to symbolize the legalistic experience of those who depended upon their own works of obedience as the means of pleasing God. The Old Covenant was the gospel in advance._
_The New Covenant- It represents the experience of those who rely completely on God's grace to do all that God has promised to do for them and in them._
_Paul’s notes on the two covenants- Paul is talking about two different responses, by believers and unbelievers, to the gospel. He is not talking about different gospels, one in the Old Testament and a different one in the New--for there is only one gospel, offered by God, "who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began" (2 Tim. 1:9, NKJV)._
_Paul’s 6 appeals- (1) "Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers" (2 Cor. 6:14, NKJV); (2) " 'Come out from among them' " (2 Cor. 6:17, NKJV); (3) " 'Be separate' " (2 Cor. 6:17, NKJV); (4)" 'Do not touch what is unclean' " (2 Cor. 6:17, NKJV); (5) "Let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit" (2 Cor. 7:1, ESV); (6) "Make holiness perfect in the fear of God" (2 Cor. 7:1, RSV; emphasis supplied). These exhortations show that a holy God requires a holy life and separation from idolatry._
_Paul’s 7 promises from God- There are seven promises that highlight the role of the Christian church as a holy temple: (1) " 'I will dwell in them' "; (2) " '[I will] walk among them' "; (3) " 'I will be their God' "; (4) " 'They shall be My people' "; (5) " 'I will receive you' "; (6) " 'I will be a Father to you' "; (7) " 'You shall be My sons and daughters' " (2 Cor. 6:16-17, 18, NKJV)._
_John Huss- He is the great reformer of old Bohemia. He was burned at the stake for heresy on July 6, 1415._
_Paul- He knew that he was nothing more than a fragile pot made of clay (2 Cor. 4:7). The gospel is preached through fragile human beings so that the glory goes to God alone (2 Cor. 4:15)._

*Discussion Questions*
📌 Paul refers to us as "jars of clay" containing the gospel treasure (2 Cor. 4:7, ESV). How can the fact that the human condition is weak, frail, and filled with limitations enhance rather than undermine the proclamation of the gospel?
📌 What does it mean to be a "new creation" (2 Cor. 5:17, NKJV)? How does this affect our daily lives? How has Christ made you a new creature?
📌 In 2 Corinthians 6:4-5, Paul provides a long list of hardships for the gospel's sake. How did he respond to his sufferings (see 2 Cor. 6:6-7)? How does this help you respond to yours?
📌 Paul contrasts godly sorrow with worldly sorrow (2 Cor. 7:10). In what manner may sorrow relate to repentance? How would you describe godly sorrow in contrast to worldly sorrow?

*Jake’s Prayer Journey*
Jake, a church planter in a country with few Christians, prioritized prayer and started recording his monthly prayer requests to see how God answered them. He and his church members took turns discipling new attendees and prayed daily, including a day for fasting. Jake met Omar, a cautious believer who wanted to be baptized, and they began studying the Bible together. He also connected with Wassim, a young man exploring Christianity after returning from a refugee experience, who also desired baptism, leading Jake to feel grateful for God's guidance and the growth of his ministry.
