Come and enjoy the peace, the time to pray and worship, and God’s loving presence with you here. St Paul’s Cathedral is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone

St Paul’s Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service. The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne’s busiest intersections today, ensuring the Cathedral a place at the heart of city life.

We’re delighted once again to partner with 24/7 Prayer Australia to host a range of interactive prayer stations at the Cathedral all week. We launch the 2026 Global Week of Prayer at our Gather service on Sunday 6 September at 6pm: Trudi Sayers (Director of 24/7 Prayer Australia) will read a lesson and Archbishop Ric will pray a prayer of blessing. You’re also welcome to join us for a closing Prayer and Worship Night on Saturday 12 September at 7pm, led by Trudi and the 24/7 Prayer Australia team.

Originally from New Zealand, Brianna is currently preparing for her AMEB Certificate of Performance exam, under the guidance of Sangmi Kim. She will perform Scarlatti’s Keyboard Sonata in D minor, K. 141, Schumann’s Arabeske in C major, Op. 18, Ginastera’s Danzas argentinas, Op. 2, Nos. 1 and 2, Beethoven’s Rondo in G major, Op. 51, No. 2, and an original work, Oporae: Misty Brow, awarded runner-up in the global Pianist Magazine 2025 Composing Competition.

Today's 1pm lunchtime concert will be performed by Emily Wang (cello) and Peter Dumsday (piano). A journey through three defining musical eras, beginning with a prelude from J.S. Bach’s fourth cello suite, a graceful masterpiece of flowing lines and harmony, followed by Beethoven’s Seven Variations on ‘Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen’, based on the beloved duet from Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute, and concluding with Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, a dramatic and expressive work that showcases the cello's remarkable range of colour, lyricism, and virtuosity.
