St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne

St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne St Paul's Cathedral is Victoria’s most visited sacred place and home to a vibrant and diverse worshipping community. Open Daily (Free Admission)
(1603)

Come and enjoy the peace, the time to pray and worship, and God’s loving presence with you here. St Paul’s Cathedral is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone

St Paul’s Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service. The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne’s busiest intersections today, ensuring the Cathedral a place at the heart of city life.

From the idyllic countryside of Wales to the nave of Notre-Dame and the streets of New England, this recital will transport you to worlds of colour and delight. Following music by Vaughan Williams, Vierne, and Price, the program closes with Franck’s monumental Chorale in A minor, which will showcase the instrument in all its majesty.

There will be an extra lunchtime concert today at 1pm performed by the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Chamber Choir. This performance showcases 20th- and 21st-century repertoire for upper voices and piano. Leonie Holmes’ The Estuary (inspired by A.R.D. Fairburn) is an ode to nature, portraying a vast and timeless landscape. Local composer Meta Cohen’s The Sunless Sea, with text by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, follows as a continuing journey to places we can only imagine. The choral scena Peter Pan by Amy Beach takes us further into our journey of the mind, embracing all of the whimsy and mischievousness of the classic literary character.
Conductor: Nicholas Dinopoulos
Pianist: Tim Mallis

Performed as a memorial to Lachlan Redd on his birthday, this is a concert that Roslyn Carolane and Lachlan had intended to perform. It shows that organ works also can be considered Impressionistic, along with Debussy's piano repertoire. Roslyn will play ‘Clair de lune’ and ‘Cathédrales’, both from the Pièces de fantaisie for organ by Louis Vierne. ‘Clair de lune’, ‘Et la lune descend sur le temple qui fut’, and ‘La cathédrale engloutie’ by Claude Debussy will be played by Kathy Ma on the piano.
We hope you can join us! Entry by donation.
