Hey Foundations Leaders?!
Have you thought about empowering your young people to take part in with embody this year?!
Takaidza loves growing fruit trees. He used to travel three kilometres from his village to dig holes in a river. The holes would fill up with water, and he would fill buckets to carry what he could home for his trees. Every year when August came around, the water in the river would dry up. There wasn’t enough water to sustain him for those following months.
Most of the people from Takaidza's village collected their water from the dirty river. Exposing them to diseases like diarrhoea and cholera.
This year, GMP Relief and Development partner Showers of Blessing installed a borehole in Takaidza’s village. The village has experienced transformation in their health. “We are no longer talking of these diseases,” Takaidza reports.
Besides providing safe drinking water, the borehole has also helped support irrigation schemes.
Before the borehole, he would spend all day watering the trees. Now the watering time is shorter, “Just one hour is enough,” he said.
The distance to collect water for his trees has reduced. This allows him to spend less time and effort on watering. Takaidza was travelling three to five kilometres. “Using my squash cart to fetch water for those plants,” he explained. With the borehole, he now only ever travels at most 500 metres.
Takaidza grows fruit trees to earn an income. Water close to home has motivated him to better support his family and help others. His business is “to assist a society," he said.
The borehole gives people better health and opportunities to financially support their families and communities. It is a vital development that Takaidza says should extend beyond Vukani Village.
“The benefit this [borehole] give[s] our society is drinking clean water.” Takaidza says, “They [Showers of Blessing] should not let other areas [live] without this scheme. So, we appreciate this programme.”
