In Luke 14:1-6, Jesus went to eat at the house of a prominent Pharisee on the Sabbath, where a man suffering from dropsy stood before Him. The religious leaders watched Jesus closely, waiting to catch Him doing wrong. Jesus asked them directly “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” They stayed silent. He healed the man and sent him away, then challenged them further, if your son or ox fell into a pit on the Sabbath, would you not immediately pull him out? Again, they had no answer.

This passage warns us about a dangerous religious condition of having knowledge of God’s word but losing the heart behind it. The Pharisees studied Scripture daily yet used it as a weapon of judgment rather than a guide to mercy. They watched Jesus with suspicion while a suffering man stood right in their1 midst.

In our world today, it is easy to become so focused on religious routine like attending services, following traditions and keeping appearances, that we overlook the hurting people around us. God desires mercy, not sacrifice (Matthew 9:13). Every person we encounter is an opportunity to reflect God’s compassion.

Let’s ask ourselves today: Are we so caught up in religious rules that we have forgotten how to be kind?

True faith isn’t found in how well we keep traditions. it is found in a heart that loves God and loves people without hesitation. Amen 🙏

Are there few that be saved?
Luke 13 vs 22 - 30
This question came from someone's curiosity. But the answer Jesus gave shows not all curiosity are productive. His answer tells us what is important- why not rather focus on you being saved?
Jesus said "Strive..." make effort to ensure you inherit eternal life. Salvation is free through the blood of Jesus (Ephesians 2 vs 8-10). But as John admonished, we should bring forth character befitting our faith (Matt. 3 vs 8 - 10). Our lifestyle should reflect repentance from ungodly works, otherwise we will be shut out of God's kingdom as Jesus and John warned from our passages. Our thoughtful actions and lifestyle based on our repentance and faith in Jesus will save us at last. Then we will be among those, few or many, that be saved. Amen

The Healing of the Bent Woman (Luke 13:10–17)

Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath when He noticed a woman who has been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and unable to straighten up. Moved with compassion, Jesus called her to Himself and declared, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity,” and laid hands on her. Immediately, she is healed and began to glorify God.

The leader of the synagogue became angry not because of the miracle, but because Jesus performed it on the Sabbath, which he believes violates religious rules. He told the people to come on the other six days to be healed, but not on the Sabbath Day. Jesus responded quickly but wisely, calling him and the others hypocrites. Jesus reminded them that if they could untie their ox or donkey to give it water on the Sabbath, how much more should this daughter of Abraham, bound by Satan for eighteen years, be released on the Sabbath? His critics were put to shame, and the people rejoiced at the wonderful things He did.

This passage reveals Jesus’ deep compassion for the suffering and His authority over spiritual oppression. It also shows the tension between religious legalism and God’s heart for mercy and restoration. Jesus prioritizes human need and divine purpose over strict ritual observance. The lesson is clear: God’s law is meant to serve people, not to hinder their progress.

The woman's healing is a picture of the liberating power of Christ. For all who encounter Jesus, especially in the midst of long-standing burdens, there is hope. He brings wholeness, declares freedom, and invites us to stand tall in the dignity of God’s beloved children. And when we choose mercy over judgment, we participate in Christ's redemptive work.

In Luke 13:1–9, Jesus responds to news about people killed in tragic events by Pontius Pilate and others when the tower of Siloam collapsed. Jesus challenged the assumption that they suffered because they were worse sinners than everyone else. Instead, Jesus makes it personal that tragedy is a reminder that life is fragile. His message was clear and urgent “unless you repent, you too will perish.” Rather than judging others, we are called to examine our own hearts, turn back to God, and live ready, aware that tomorrow is never guaranteed.
In Luke 13:6–9, Jesus tells a parable about a fig tree that hasn’t produced any fruit for three years. The owner wants to cut it down, but the gardener asks for one more year to dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit, good. If not, it will be cut down. The message is powerful: God looks for change and good fruits in our lives. While God is patient and gracious, he will also hold every believer accountable. We are given time and opportunity to bear fruit while we are alive now. We must not take this opportunity lightly lest we also be cut down.

"I Wish We'd All Been Ready"
Luke 12 vs 35 – 40
Jesus encourages believers to prepare to welcome Him when He returns. He admonished readiness like servants waiting for their Master coming late at night, without knowing when exactly He shows at the door. They do not want to keep Him waiting for a moment but respond as soon as He knocks.
Like staying awake at night, partying, slumber and forgetfulness can be hinderances to our vigil. So as believers, we want to stay awake and alert while awaiting the coming our much-beloved Jesus. Life’s legitimate and core businesses of work, livelihood, friendship and family should not be hinderance to living our faith. Likewise, life’s mundane things like fame, entertainment, keeping up with the Joneses should not serve as distractions.
In readiness, we constantly reflect in our lives Christ’s teachings on love, forgiveness, faithfulness, honesty, modesty and fidelity. So would we all be ready for His coming. Amen

“Ye are worth more than many sparrows…”
Luke 12 vs 22 – 34
Jesus reassures us of God’s care by comparing our value to sparrows that were worth less than a hour’s pay in His days. If God looked after those sparrows that humans would not spare thought for, then we should know He cares for us who are created in His image. If none of them would fall to the ground without God knowing of it and the ravens who would not as much as work like you and I, then God will care for us who are endowed with intelligence to work, save, sow and reap.
This Christmas, it is natural to be encumbered with care – failed hopes in the outgoing year and fears about the incoming year. But Jesus tells us not to be worried about what to eat or drink or anything at all but rather seek first God’s kingdom and its righteousness. He would reassures all who will believe in Him not to fear, “for it is the Father’s good pleasure to give unto us the kingdom” and all its fulness. As we believe, we will have all that pertain to life and godliness today and always (2 Peter 1 vs 3). He will always sort things all out for everyone. We just need to believe. Amen

In Luke 12:13–21, Jesus tells the story of a rich man whose land produced a great harvest. Instead of being thankful or generous, the man decided to store up all his wealth as security, saying to himself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink, and be merry.” But God called him a fool, saying that very night his life would be taken and all he stored up would mean nothing. He had planned on his wealth without any reverence to God.

This parable reminds us that life is not about how much we own but about the condition of our hearts before God. In today’s world, it’s easy to measure success by money, cars, houses, or followers. We chase comfort and security, forgetting that everything we have can disappear in a moment. Jesus warns us to be “rich toward God”, that is to invest in things that last: faith, love, generosity and service to God and others.

Being rich toward God means giving freely, helping those in need, and living with gratitude to Him. It means realizing that every blessing is a trust from God, not just for our comfort but for His purpose.

Let’s ask ourselves today: Are we building bigger barns for ourselves, or are we building God’s kingdom? True wealth isn’t found in possessions it is found in a heart that treasures God above all else. Amen

The Sign of Jonas: Luke 11: 29 - 32
Here, Jesus lamented unbelief of the people at the time. He said it is an evil generation that seeks a sign and will only be given the sign of Jonas (Jonah).

The story of Jonah is a famous one concerning faith where God leads us and Jesus was specifically referring to the repentance of the Ninevites simply at the words of Jonah, no sign necessary. Even in Jesus’ times there were people who were unable to have simple, child-like faith in God’s word even when it came from Jesus Himself. How worrying it is to think of the decline since then!

The biggest takeaway from these instances is that one must always have faith in God and His plan even when we do not understand all that happens around us. Furthermore, if you desire proof of God’s existence or power, all you must do is look around and surely you can find it. And that Jesus rose after 3 days in the tomb and rose again like Jonah spent 3 days in the big fish before he was released.
