"Deterrence" Revisited
Depicting the terrible suffering of Asylum seekers held in various forms of detention under Australian Law, “Deterrence” will be installed on the lawns at South Melbourne Uniting Church prior to Easter.

The sculpture, created by John Tansey, was first erected in St Kilda in 2014 when Scott Morrison was Immigration Minister, and the Tony Abbott Government took the Labor Party’s offshore policy further by giving more powers to the Government to enact cruelty. Some of the current asylum seekers held in detention have been held since 2013. The sculpture brings to the fore the suffering inflicted upon asylum seekers as a deterrent, to “Stop the Boats” but most now concede that it is used purely by the government for political purposes as a fear campaign at the ballot box.

May this add to the many voices calling for a change to the harmful policies and to free the asylum seekers into the community.

The installation will be launched with a vigil on the afternoon of Wednesday 13th April
