Saint Phanourios, Martyr and Wonderworker

Saint Phanourios is a beloved Orthodox saint, venerated as a martyr and wonderworker. His life story is shrouded in mystery, but his cult arose when his icon was discovered in Rhodes in the 14th century, depicting him as a youthful soldier holding a cross and surrounded by scenes of his martyrdom. Since then, countless faithful have testified to his powerful intercession, especially in ‘revealing’ (Greek: phanerono) lost items, hidden paths, or answers to prayer. Devotion to him is closely tied to the tradition of baking the Phanouropita.

«Ἐν τῇ γεννήσει τήν παρθενίαν ἐφύλαξας, ἐν τῇ κοιμήσει τόν κόσμον οὐ κατέλιπες Θεοτόκε. Μετέστης πρός τήν Ζωήν, Μήτηρ ὑπάρχουσα τῆς Ζωῆς. Καί ταῖς πρεσβείαις ταῖς σαῖς λυτρουμένη ἐκ θανάτου τάς ψυχᾶς ἠμῶν» (Απολυτίκιον).

«Τήν ἐν πρεσβείαις ἀκοίμητον Θεοτόκον καί προστασίαις ἀμετάθετον ἐλπίδα, τάφος καί νέκρωσις οὐκ ἐκράτησεν· ὡς γάρ ζωῆς Μητέρα πρός τήν ζωήν μετέστησεν ὁ μήτραν οἰκήσας ἀειπάρθενον» (Κοντάκιον).

θανάτω θάνατον πατήσας
και τοις εν τοις μνήμασιν,
ζωήν χαρισάμενος.
Ανάστασιν Χριστού θεασάμενοι,
προσκυνήσομεν Άγιον, Κύριον,
Ιησούν τον μόνον αναμάρτητον.
Τον Σταυρόν Σου Χριστέ προσκυνούμεν
και την Αγίαν σου Ανάστασην
υμνούμεν και δοξάζωμεν
Συ γαρ ει ο Θεός ημών,
εκτός Σου άλλον ουκ οίδαμεν,
