This week is National Op Shop week. There are Op Shops all over the country. Some are part of a large organisation such as Uniting or the Salvos, others are simply run locally out of churches, garages, community halls, and some are even privately owned. Some are an ongoing presence in the community, others pop up just for a day or two. Some are mobile, reaching out to remote communities. Whatever their format, Op Shops play a big role in reducing waste to landfill, providing affordable clothing and household items to people on low income, as well as to those who would prefer to buy second hand goods to do their bit for the environment; more often than not, the profits go towards community and not-for-profit programs to support people doing it tough. The people who volunteer their time enjoy the time spent with other volunteers and connecting with the people who come to the Op Shop to browse, always hoping to find a hidden gem.
If you’re looking for something to wear and you want to help others, shopping at your local op shop is a great way to do both.
You can donate quality goods, bag a bargain or even volunteer your time. It is dedicated volunteers who keep op shops running to raise funds for services and offer affordable goods to local communities.
Whichever way you want to help, you will make a difference in your community and to the environment.
