Seeing Differently: Faith Over Fear
Bible Reading : 1 Samuel 17
Scripture Reading – 1 Samuel 17 (Selected Verses)
In 1 Samuel 17, the Bible tells the story of David and Goliath. The Philistines gathered for battle against Israel. A champion named Goliath came out daily, challenging the army of Israel.
"And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid." (1 Samuel 17:24)
"Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" (1 Samuel 17:26)
"Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.”(1 Samuel 17:45–46)
"So, David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone." (1 Samuel 17:50)
1. David Had a Peculiar Perspective
When others saw a giant, David saw an uncircumcised man. The Israelite army saw his height, armor, spear, and experience. David saw a man without covenant, a man standing alone without God.
Perspective changes everything. Where others said, “He is too big to fight,” David believed he was too big to miss. Faith gives you a different lens.
2. David Saw the Armies of the Living God
David did not see frightened soldiers. He saw the armies of the living God. The difference was not size, it was identity. They forgot who they were; David remembered whose they were.
3. We Walk by Faith and Not by Sight
"For we walk by faith, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:7)
The Israelite army walked by sight and fear appeared. David walked by faith and saw possibility. Faith does not deny reality; it declares that God is greater than reality.
4. David Believed He Stood a Better Chance
Humanly speaking, David had no armor, no sword, and no battle experience. Goliath had weapons, training, and reputation. But David had God and that alone meant he stood the better chance.
5. We Must Learn to See Differently
When you face sickness, failure, poverty, rejection, or opposition, do not see only the giant. Ask yourself: Does this problem override God’s promise? The answer is always no.
6. Identify Yourself in Christ
If you are in Christ, you are redeemed, covered, and not alone. You stand a better chance against any adversary, not because of your strength, but because of your identity in Him.
7. Let Our Faith Demonstrate There Is a God in Heaven
"…that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel." (1 Samuel 17:46)
Your victory is not just about you. It is about showing the world that God is real. Let your life and your faith demonstrate that there is a God in Heaven and He is with you.
Conclusion
The difference between David and the army was not size but it was sight. One saw a giant. The other saw God. Choose faith over fear, covenant over circumstance, identity over intimidation and the giants in your life will fall.
Amen.
