This Sunday: Essential Christian Doctrines #6
Your Adversary the Devil: Satan and evil

Contrary to popular imagination, Satan is not the source of all evil. Also country to popular imagination, we know little about Satan's origins; however we do know clearly his role and strategies, and how believers must respond to him, standing in the victory we have in the crucified and risen Christ.

This Friday at Friday Feed: a new series on forgiveness.

Biblically, there is not such thing as 'unconditional forgiveness'. God does not ignore, downplay or just forget sin. He forgives because the penalty for sin has been paid by the shed and precious blood of Christ. Our forgiveness is conditional upon justification in Christ being applied to us by the Holy Spirit, producing the fruit of repentance and confession. Knowledge of my justification in Christ gives me the freedom and confidence to confess my sins to God, because I know that forgiveness is guaranteed.

This Sunday: Glorified Dust: The Doctrine of Humanity.

Jesus shows us in an exchange with the Pharisees over the Sabbath what the ultimate purpose of human being are: to enjoy the Sabbath Rest of God. Our true and full humanity is found not only in the creational design, but in the Last Adam, Jesus Christ. All that sin undid and corrupted, by his death and resurrection he has restored for all who have faith in him. The true Prophet, Priest and King, he restores us in himself back to our high human calling.

This Sunday: The Aching Heart: Why filling yourself will only leave you empty (Ecclesiastes 2:1-26)

Under the Sun, pleasure is fleeting. We claim joy over things that are mundane. We think bigger is better, and that making it all about us will bring us satisfaction.

Only in Christ, when we are set free from introspection and given the vertical view to see that all things are a gracious gif from the Father, can we savour our earthly joys because they point us upward to the ultimate joy of knowing and enjoying God.

Only in Christ can we know joy in the midst of life's injustices, because we look forward to a new earth in which righteousness will dwell, where all our toil now will not be wasted because it will be transformed into glory.

So it's not enough to be merely wise instead of a fool. We need to be someone who pleases God instead of a sinner. Again, that may only happen in Christ, who removes our sin and clothes us in his righteousness - by grace alone trough faith alone.

This Sunday we start a new series in the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon invites us to join him in a ‘Wisdom Experiment’ to explore what life would be like if there were above us only sky - life ‘Under the Sun’. He gives us his conclusions in chapter one: All is an empty mist; everything just goes round and round; and there is nothing truly new.
All three of these conclusions are challenged and answered by the Gospel: 1. You were created for eternity; 2. Jesus shows us how human life has purpose and a goal; 3. and in Jesus, born of a virgin, dying a once-and-for-all atoning death, the first to be raised from the dead to never die again, God has done something New that means eventually all things will be made new.

This Sunday: Walking in the Truth Part 2 (2-3 John)
'Going on ahead' is to say that Jesus and what he accomplished in his life, death, resurrection and reign is not enough; we need to add more - more works, more experiences, more revelations and prophecies, more...
As soon as we try to add to the finished work of Christ, we are taking away fro the fullness we have been given in him - fullness that gives us a sure assurance in life and death, and fullness that equips us for love and good works.
Rest (abide) in the teaching of Christ, the faith once delivered to the saints, and don't be disturbed or led astray by the 'antichrists' who will tell you to do otherwise. Commit yourself to the face-to-face fellowship of God's people the church, and find your grounding in the faithful Bible teaching from your local pulpit and the opportunity to love one another as Jesus commands.

This Sunday: Walking in the Truth - 1 (2 John 1-13)

Truth is vital if we are to love one another sincerely. Truth may be known in a world of fake news. Truth will dwell with and in us forever, because Truth is the basis on which the Father has given us grace, mercy and peace in the Son. And so Truth is something that we must walk in as children of God.
