This Sunday we continue our series in Exodus looking at a well known event - the Golden Calf. Despite God's goodness and faithfulness his people turned to idolatry and God's anger burned. We will be looking at the seriousness of attributing God's good gifts to another and the startling way God's anger gets expressed.

A chunk of Exodus from chapters 25-40 contains instructions for building a tent - or in the language of Exodus, a tabernacle. This tent was designed to be portable so this place of God's presence would move with God's people. In the new testament, in John's Gospel, we read how Jesus came and tabernacled among us. God invites us into the privilege of knowing him and meeting with a holy God. And we have a reminder of this privilege when we come to church each week.

This week at church we are continuing our series in Exodus and seeing how God has been faithful to his people, Israel. God gave them an enormous privilege: a way to meet with him and a way for him to be present with them. But we will see that for a sinful people the presence of God is a problem.

"God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them." 2 Corinthians 5:19

On Sunday while the kids were listening to a bible story about Abraham, the adults were listening to a sermon from Exodus 24: "At the heart of Israel's relationship with God is not a gold statue or a philosophy or an enlightened priesthood but God's word. We cannot worship God and deny his word - we hear and respond in obedience".

This Sunday we are looking at Exodus 24:1-11 where God confirms his agreement between himself and his people - an agreement that continues today. It is an enormous privilege but it comes with an enormous cost - ultimately it costs the blood of Jesus.

"Christ is the mediator of a new covenant that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance." Hebrews 9:15

Three take aways from last Sunday's sermon on The Book of the Covenant (Exodus 22-23):

1. Our worship of God should not be an after thought - be intentional with how we use our time, energy and talents. Don't mock God with our loose change.
2. We need to care about justice because God does. The truth matters. Integrity is not subjective or situational.
3. God wants us to care about the weak and powerless: the economically vulnerable, the sojourner and those without protection. Failure to care is a failure to love.

Next Sunday we will be looking at Exodus 24.

This Sunday we are continuing in Exodus looking at a chunk of chapters (21 to 23) and learning that God wants us to care about three things: our relationship with him, justice and the weak.
