Appointment of an Interim Pastor at Hobart Baptist Church

On Sunday 23 August, Kelvin Smith was appointed Interim Pastor of Hobart Baptist Church for the next six months. This follows Pastor Matt Henderson’s diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue early in the year, which has significantly limited his capacity for pastoral ministry, teaching and Sunday services. Kelvin and the Leaders have sought to support Matt as he navigated his health challenges. As Matt’s availability has been severely limited, Kelvin has gradually taken on additional responsibilities, and for several months has carried the full pastoral load alongside his regular work—an exceptionally demanding season....

Tony & Kathy Fogarty After more than 40 years of faithful involvement at Burnie Baptist Church, Tony and Kathy Fogarty have farewelled their church family as they begin a new chapter in Perth. For decades, Tony and Kathy have been part of the fabric of Burnie Baptist, serving in countless ways and often quietly carrying the practical responsibilities that help a church keep going. From office administration and building maintenance to many other areas of service, their contribution has been significant and deeply appreciated. Their farewell service on Sunday 16 August was a special occasion....

A Future Filled with Potential! Steve Fitzallen begins at Summerhill Baptist

There is a sense of fresh possibility at Summerhill Baptist Church as Steve Fitzallen begins as their new interim pastor. Steve commenced on 18 August and was formally inducted on Sunday 23 August, bringing a wealth of ministry experience, energy and enthusiasm to the role. Based in Launceston’s western suburbs, Summerhill is a diverse and welcoming church with a strong community and family focus. Their ministries extend well beyond Sunday gatherings, including small groups, playgroup, youth ministry, Chat and Choose and a community basketball club. Earlier this year, Summerhill undertook a church review, providing a clear set of goals and recommendations to help shape the church’s future....

New Testament Translation, Last Hurdles!

There is a growing excitement around the New Testament translation project as the Tasmanian Baptist team and the translation team continue to build a deep partnership together. The practical preparations are now well underway, with the MOU finalised after being carefully reviewed by a number of experienced people, including Baptist Mission Australia. More importantly, the translation team has taken time to work through the agreement together so that everyone understands the partnership and is confident about the way forward. Our recent Zoom meeting was a particularly encouraging time. There was plenty to talk through, but also a wonderful sense of anticipation as we began to imagine what it will mean for this community to have the New Testament in their own mother tongue....

Remembering Francis Cole

Francis (Frank) Cole died peacefully in the Royal Hobart Hospital on 29 July after a long illness. Francis was born at Everest in North Tasmania on 6 July 1934. His father, Francis, was an engineer who worked on the Duck Reach Power Station and the Trevallyn Dam. His mother, Audrey, was a founding member of the Exeter Red Cross. His grandfather was Dr. Francis Cole of Deloraine. Francis was the dearly loved husband of Eva and late wife Jennifer and father of Andrew. He was educated at the Launceston Church of England Grammar School and the Hawkesbury Agricultural College in New South Wales, the later where he was led to Christian faith by a fellow student; he soon became involved with the open air campaigners and was baptized by immersion....
