Have you ever heard someone use "covenant" and "contract" like they mean the same thing? They don't — and that difference is about to change how you read your whole Bible. 🤔

A contract ends the moment its terms are broken. A covenant is different: it's built on promise, not performance. Genesis 15 shows us just how radical God's covenant really is — He put Abraham into a deep sleep, and while Abraham lay there completely unconscious, only a smoking firepot and a blazing torch passed between the pieces. Abraham never signed anything. He wasn't even awake for it.

That's the New Covenant. It wasn't cut with you, as a nervous party trying to hold up your end — it was cut for you, settled entirely between the Father and the Son, sealed by a faithfulness that has never once failed.

This Sunday in Part 2 of Covenant Clarity, we're asking the questions religion rarely lets us ask out loud: if Jesus died two thousand years ago, why do we still talk about forgiveness like it's something we're waiting on? Does confessing a sin make it forgiven — or are we simply agreeing, out loud, with something the Cross already settled? And if performance was never the missing ingredient... what actually decides where you stand with God?

If someone told you to turn to the beginning of the New Covenant, would you open to Genesis? Matthew? 🤔

Here's the catch: neither is quite right. The New Covenant didn't begin with a birth in Bethlehem — it began at the Cross and was delivered on the Day of Pentecost. Jesus was "born under the law" (Galatians 4:4-5), which means the four Gospels sit on a bridge between two covenants, not fully inside either one.

Here's what genuinely grieves me: most of the confusion in the church today isn't because people don't love Jesus — it's because almost no one has ever actually been taught the difference between the Old Covenant and the New. When did the Old truly end? When did the New truly begin? Most believers have never been given a clear answer to either question, so they read the whole Bible as one flat, undivided book and end up tangled in a mixture of law and grace that was never meant to coexist. This isn't advanced theology — it's foundational, basic understanding every believer deserves to have. It's time the church finally gets this.

This Sunday we're asking: what actually changed at the Cross? How the definition of sin shifts from "falling short of the rules" to "unbelief in the goodness of God." Why forgiveness is a finished, past-tense reality — not a daily instalment plan you re-earn every time you slip. And what it looks like to finally read the same Bible, but through the right lens.

*Have you ever read the Book of Romans and walked away more burdened and confused?
*Why is it that the Church keeps getting The Book of Romans wrong? Why instead of setting people free does it place more burdens on people?*

This is not because Paul was unclear but because most of us read his most powerful letter without the two keys that unlock it.

**Key #1 — You're reading from the wrong side of the cross.**
In Romans 1–4, Paul reasons alongside a Jewish objector standing *before* Calvary — arguing about righteousness the way Abraham experienced it: real faith, but faith looking forward to a promise God hadn't yet fulfilled in history. Then chapter 5 hits, and Paul never looks back: "We HAVE been justified" (5:1). "Christ died for us" (5:8) — past tense, done. Two different vantage points, one letter. Collapse them into one flat reading and you'll spend your whole Christian life striving toward a finished work instead of resting in one.

**Key #2 — You're mistaking the opponent's voice for Paul's.**
Scholars call it *diatribe* — a rhetorical style Paul borrowed from first-century moral philosophy (you'll find the definitive study in Stanley Stowers' *The Diatribe and Paul's Letter to the Romans*). Paul stages an imaginary objector, lets him push an argument to its worst extreme, then flattens it with two Greek words: *mē genoito* — "By no means!" Watch for it at 3:31, 6:1–2, 6:15, 7:7, 9:14, 11:1, 11:11. Miss the pattern, and you will — like generations before you — build an entire theology on a sentence Paul wrote specifically to demolish.

Put those two keys together and Romans stops reading like a legal brief and starts reading like what Paul actually called it: **the power of God that brings salvation** — a gospel that's good news from first to last, not good advice with strings attached.

That's the whole heart behind this study. Sixteen chapters. Every shift in argument flagged. Every objector unmasked. Every "by no means" landing the way Paul meant it to land — as freedom, not fear.

Is God punishing an innocent Jesus so you can go free — and is that actually good news? 🤔
For centuries, many churches have taught "penal substitutionary atonement" — the idea that God's wrath against your sin had to be poured out on someone, and Jesus took the punishment in your place. It's become the default explanation of the cross in a lot of evangelical circles.
But it's worth asking: is that the only way the Bible describes what happened on the cross? Long before this theory took shape (it really sharpens up with the Reformers, over 1,000 years after Christ), the early church talked about the cross very differently — as Christ's victory over sin, death, and evil (Christus Victor), and as the supreme demonstration of God's love that draws us back to him.
Some theologians have raised a hard question: does picturing the Father punishing the Son risk making the cross look like divine child abuse rather than a unified act of self-giving love? We think that's a question worth sitting with, not rushing past.
