What do all these verses have in common? "Whover wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me", "whoever loses your life for my sake will find it", "love your neighbor as yourself", "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble".
Jesus humbled Himself, and to obey God, He could not be selfish in any way, for that would be prideful and displeasing to God.
How under-taught is the Christian theme of being unselfish. It's impossible for the proud and selfish to truly love as Christ loved. 1 Corinthians 13 says "love is not self-seeking".
Jesus was the epitome of love, and the epitome of unselfishness and empathy. "If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need, but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person".
Five things we can do to overcome our selfishness ... (1) Be intentional. Wake up in the morning and pray to God, 'I'm at your service, what can I do for you today Jesus?' (2) Be sacrificial not self-indulgent. Be prepared to miss out on something or give up something for someone who needs it more. (3) Be caring and sharing. The value of Christian service is the benefit it provides to someone else. (4) Be a team player, not every man for himself. Be known as someone who cooperates and contributes to the family, the team and the community for the benefit, welfare and interest of others. (5) Be a helper and a shining light, by offering your services to assist someone who needs it.
