Want to thank a Sister for her vocation? On September 28, 2025 the Sydney Vocations Centre will host a Day of Renewal for religious and consecrated women. Father John Burns and Sister Miriam Heidland will lead the retreat, focused on the theme of Healing the Consecrated Heart. The Sydney Vocation Centre hopes to facilitate the gift of a beautifully crafted journal for each sister who attends our retreat. The journal is produced by The Written Seed and provides a space for the consecrated sister to document her prayers, insights, intentions and daily experiences to deepen her faith, fostering an ongoing dialogue with God and aiding in personal contemplation. Your gift is a way to honour the consecrated vocation and express gratitude for religious sisters serving in our Archdiocese.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the burning symbol of God’s boundless love for humanity a heart that beats with mercy, compassion, and sacrifice. It is a heart that was pierced for our sins, yet remains open, always inviting us closer. In the Sacred Heart, we see not only the depth of Christ’s suffering, but the tenderness of His love.

As we reflect on his birth, we are invited to consider our own calling to witness to Christ with courage, to speak truth with love, and to live in such a way that our lives, like John’s, lead others to Jesus.

St Aloysius Gonzaga is a powerful example of youthful holiness and heroic love. Born into nobility, he gave up wealth, status, and privilege to follow Christ as a Jesuit. Even as a young man, he had a deep desire for purity and prayer, seeing life not as something to be clung to, but as a gift to be offered. During a plague in Rome, he selflessly served the sick, eventually contracting the illness himself and dying at just 23.

In prayer, in the sacraments, and in the love we share, the Trinity is present and active. Every sign of the Cross we make is a reminder that we live and move and have our being in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, one God in three Persons, who draws us into eternal love.

Saint Charles Lwanga and his companions, known as the Ugandan Martyrs, were a group of young Christians who courageously chose to die rather than renounce their faith or submit to the immoral demands of King Mwanga II in the late 19th century. Led by Lwanga, a Catholic catechist, they were burned alive for their beliefs, including the youngest, Saint Kizito, who was just 14. Their martyrdom became a powerful witness to the strength of faith and inspired the growth of Christianity in Uganda. Their story challenges us today to live with integrity, stand firm in our beliefs, and remain faithful even in the face of persecution.

Yesterday, we celebrated the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord.

Jesus didn’t ascend to leave us behind, but to go ahead of us to prepare a place for us and to send us on mission. The disciples watched Him rise, not into absence, but into glory. And from that glory, He continues to intercede for us, guide us, and remain with us through the power of the Holy Spirit.

May the Ascension remind us that heaven is our true home and that every act of faith here on earth draws us closer to it.

When Mary set out “in haste” to visit Elizabeth, it wasn’t just a meeting of two women it was a meeting of grace and joy, of promise and fulfillment. Mary had just received the greatest news the world had ever known: that she would bear the Son of God. And her first response wasn’t to retreat inward, but to go outward in love.

The Visitation shows us that true encounter with God always leads to mission. Mary didn’t keep the grace she received to herself — she brought Christ, quite literally, into someone else’s life. And when she did, something miraculous happened: John leapt in Elizabeth’s womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. The presence of Christ, even hidden in the womb, awakened joy and prophecy.

This moment reminds us that we are called not just to receive Christ, but to carry Him to others. Every act of charity, encouragement, or quiet service becomes a kind of “visitation” a chance to let someone else encounter the presence of God through us.

St. Philip understood a truth we often forget: God doesn’t just want your obedience He wants your joy. He believed that souls are drawn to Christ not by fear, but by love. His joy wasn’t shallow or naive; it was born of deep intimacy with Jesus, sustained by prayer and sacrament, and expressed in spontaneous acts of kindness, humor, and charity.

He once said, “Cheerfulness strengthens the heart and makes us persevere in a good life.” And in a world that often equates seriousness with holiness, Philip reminds us that smiling saints can change the world too.

On his feast, may we rediscover the joy of being loved by God and let that joy be our strength, our witness, and our gift to others.

This title, deeply rooted in Church history, was invoked by countless saints and the faithful during times of persecution and hardship. St. John Bosco had deep devotion to Our Lady Help of Christians, believing firmly that she would defend the Church and guide her children through every storm. And she still does.

When we are weary, under attack, or tempted to despair, Mary stands beside us as a mother who fights for her children not with weapons, but with grace, prayer, and unshakable faith.

She helps not by removing the cross, but by helping us carry it. She draws our eyes to Christ, reminding us that victory belongs not to the strong, but to the faithful.

On this feast, let us entrust ourselves, our families, and the Church to her care and with confidence, echo the prayer of generations past:

Our Lady, Help of Christians, pray for us.
