Leichhardt Uniting Church - LUC

Leichhardt Uniting Church - LUC A community of people committed to following Jesus. Who We Are:
We are a community of followers of the original Social Justice Warrior: Jesus.

We are serious about God’s call to love our neighour as we seek to live out our mission of Keeping Faith, Doing Justice and Building Community. We take our call to discipleship seriously, but we have a lot of fun doing it. Our strength is our diverse congregation, whose commitment to Christ is reflected in our missional focus:
Keeping Faith
Doing Justice
Building Community

Our History & Theology:

Originally founded as a Methodist Church in 1880, Leichhardt Uniting Church (LUC) is a member of the Uniting Church in Australia. Our history is steeped in Radical Discipleship: a path that compels us to engage in social justice action and advocacy. We are an affirming church and welcome members of the LGBTQIA+ community. We are also an anti-racist church, committed to decolonising, and building relationships with the First Peoples of this continent. And even though we've been around for more than 140 years, we are a young and growing congregation. Children are welcome to attend services or to join in with our amazing morning kids church: LUCy Ducks. A vital part of our church is Epworth House. Located next door, Epworth House is an intentional Christian community of students who contribute to the life and mission of LUC. What To Expect:
We typically have two services a day: 10am and 6:30pm. If you come in the morning, expect a boisterous crowd, an excellent morning tea and a mixture of old and new songs. If you come in the evening, expect to see more of our student community, a relaxed atmosphere and mostly modern songs. We also host a supper after our evening service, which everyone is welcome to attend. Our Moderation Policy:
We welcome respectful discussion and debate. We're definitely the kind of place to tackle tough questions. But comments that are racist, sexist, homophobic, or amount to bullying or name-calling will be deleted. Save that for Twitter!

LUC participates in an annual covenanting process – annual, in recognition that life has seasons and LUC is a somewhat transient community. A covenant is a prayerful commitment and is an ancient and Biblical practice, also expressedin our Methodist heritage.
A covenant also involves mutuality between two parties, e.g., between God and God’s people. Members are invited to commit to the life of LUC for the next year, as LUC commits to loving, teaching and nurturing them, and building them up as a disciple of Jesus.
This is not a requirement; it is an invitation: to commit to the life and mission of this community of faith for the next year, investing in the flourishing of this congregation.

Happy Father’s Day 💛

Today we give thanks for the fathers, grandfathers, father-figures, mentors and friends who have taught us something of love, care and courage.

And we hold in prayer those for whom today brings grief, longing, absence or complicated memories.

May we keep growing into a gentler kind of strength. One that listens, nurtures and makes room for others to flourish.

LUC is a vibrant community and home to many q***r, trans and gender diverse folks. We stand firmly in an ancient tradition of welcome and expanding the table so that all may join, a practice modelled by Christ and deeply embedded within LGBTQIA+ communities. We do this not because it suits our agenda but because we understand that this is what we are directly called to do.
Members of the LGBTQIA+ community know that safety and security cannot be taken forgranted. While many of us enjoy the freedom to live as our whole selves, we know that this is not the case for many q***r and trans siblings across this continent, and the world. For that reason, we are committed, as a church, to activism and advocacy that affirms the rights of LGBTQIA+ peoples.
In doing this, we acknowledge the bravery and wisdom of our elders, both within and outside of the church, who have fought so hard for the rights and freedoms we now enjoy. Similarly, we acknowledge that the struggle for LGBTQIA+ liberation is deeply entwined with anti-racism, anti-capitalism, decolonisation and disability justice, and that our work must be informed by and stand in solidarity with these movements.
