The growing Coptic community in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney petitioned Bishop Samuel for a church. On the 3rd of September 1972 A Methodist Church, in Kensington, was leased and later purchased by the Copts. It was in August 1973 that Bishop Samuel along with Fr Mina Nematalla and Fr Youhanna celebrated the first Liturgy in the church. An impressive two storey Sunday school building containing s

even classes and office and large hall was constructed in 1984. His Holiness Pope Shenouda later consecrated the Church on November 22nd 1989. Since then Parish Priest Father Marcos Khella transformed the interior of the church by contracting expert craftsmen from Egypt to design, hand carve and install an Iconostasis, 36 icons, 2 pulpits, a large dome on the alter, and a niche, all beautifully fashioned according to traditional Coptic design. This took place between 1991/1992 thus making St George Church a splendid monument of Coptic Art and Iconography. By 1993 The Lord had blessed the church with a growing congregation and a new priest, Father Rafael. In 2000 Major changes were made to the church building as another church was built upstairs for English services as well as new Sunday school rooms and youth area. In 2004 Father Matthew was ordained priest for youth ministry and began his service at St George Church. Due to the growth and demand for service at St George in 2013 Dr Raef Farag the Sunday school coordinator at St George was ordained as the Father Kyrillos the fourth serving Priest of St George

The Entrance of Christ into Egypt

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Entrance of Christ into Egypt (Matthew 2:13:23), one of the 7 Minor Lordly Feasts.

When Christ entered Egypt what happened??

1. "The Lord cleansed and purified Egypt from idols (Isaiah 19:1).

2. The Lord enlightened Egypt by establishing an altar and subsequently a great Church (Isaiah 19:19).

3. The Lord sanctified and blessed the people of Egypt (Isaiah 19:25).

Similarly when the Risen Christ enters your heart and life the idols will disappear, His light will shine brightly in you and through you and He will sanctify and bless your nature, making your heart a throne for the Holy Trinity.

The Feast of Pentecost

“Through the Holy Spirit comes our restoration to paradise, our ascension into the kingdom of heaven, our return to the adoption of sons, our liberty to call God our Father, our being made partakers of the grace of Christ, our being called children of light, our sharing in eternal glory, and, in a word, our being brought into a state of all “fulness of blessing,” both in this world and in the world to come, of all the good gifts that are in store for us, by promise hereof, through faith, beholding the reflection of their grace as though they were already present, we await the full enjoyment.”

A blessed Feast of the Glorious Ascension of Christ

Beloved, on this joyful day we recall the words of St. John Chrysostom:
“Today Christ ascended into heaven, not to leave us, but to carry our nature with Him into the glory of the Father.”

The Ascension is not just a memory, but a living pledge that we are called to lift our hearts above earthly things and live in heavenly hope.
As St. Athanasius the Apostolic said: “As the Head ascended, so shall the whole body be lifted with Him.”

Let us rejoice and be glad, for Christ has opened the gates of heaven and given us the pledge of eternal glory.
The Ascension is a daily call to live as if we are journeying toward heaven—our hearts bound to Christ, our eyes fixed on the glory awaiting us

Wishing you a blessed feast, filled with joy and everlasting heavenly hope

The Glorious Feast of the Ascension

“Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him. Listen to the words of the Apostle: If you have risen with Christ, set your hearts on the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God; seek the things that are above, not the things that are on earth.

For just as he remained with us even after his ascension, so we too are already in heaven with him, even though what is promised us has not yet been fulfilled in our bodies.” St. Augustine of Hippo

May the blessings of the Feast of the Ascension bring us all great joy.

The Feast of St Athanasius The Apostlic

“When I praise Athanasius I praise virtue.
When I mention virtue I point to him, as he possessed of all virtues.

He was a true pillar of the Church.
His life and conduct were examples for bishops.
And his doctrine presents the rule of the Orthodox faith.”
