Receive God's gift, rest in His peace.
God is faithful.
Wait confidently for His Divine intervention. Praise be to God
“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
—John 14:27 NKJV
Jesus knew that He was about to ascend into Heaven. Soon, He would be gone, and His physical presence would be greatly missed. I’m sure He knew His disciples would feel His absence deeply and might experience anxiety, doubt, confusion, fear, and every other emotion that comes with such a loss.
So Jesus promised them two precious gifts: the gift of the Helper, the Holy Spirit, and the gift of His peace.
When my children were small and Mom and Dad had to go away, we had a little game we played that helped them get through those times—we created a scavenger hunt! We would purchase a little treat for each day we were gone. It might be a new VHS movie, a small toy, or one of their favorite treats. Once they had completed their chores or homework, they would receive the first clue leading them to their hidden treasure!
What that little game did was give our children a tangible reminder of our love while we were away. Those little gifts gave them something to look forward to and the reassurance that Mom and Dad would be coming home. Each small token of love reminded them that something greater was waiting for them when we returned.
I believe Jesus was doing something similar with His disciples. He was preparing them for His departure and assuring them that although He would no longer be physically present, they would not be left without His presence, His help, or His peace.
Our church celebrates a monthly park service, and as we serve our community and interact with people, it’s easy to see how deeply a lack of peace has affected so many lives. Mental and emotional struggles have disrupted families. People are overwhelmed by the pressures of life, and many are searching for answers, trying to find relief from the anxiety and stress that surround them.
But we who have received the Holy Spirit have also received the gift of God’s peace! The peace Jesus speaks of enables believers to remain calm even in the most frightening circumstances. The Bible tells us that in this life we will experience sickness, pain, trials, and tribulations. But Jesus has also equipped us to overcome and has given us the reassurance of a peace that passes all understanding.
You and I have access to His peace while we wait for God’s divine intervention.
Peace is a supernatural calm in the midst of difficult circumstances. God’s peace gives us clarity when situations are confusing and conflicting. God’s peace overrides anxiety and fear. And His peace is readily accessible through prayer and the reading of His Word.
When we pray, we release our burdens to a God who is all-powerful, loving, and faithful to His promises. When we read His Word, it comes alive and ministers to our heart, mind, and soul.
My favorite Scripture when I need peace—which, honestly, is often—is found in Isaiah:
“You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.”
—Isaiah 26:3 NKJV
What a promise!
The world offers temporary solutions, distractions, and substitutes for peace. Jesus offers us His peace. It isn’t dependent upon our circumstances. It doesn’t disappear when the storm comes. And we don’t have to wait for everything around us to settle down before we can experience it.
His peace is a gift.
So when your heart is troubled, when fear begins to creep in, when you don’t understand what God is doing, remember His promise: “My peace I give you.”
Receive the gift.
Rest in His presence.
Trust His Word.
And wait confidently for His divine intervention.
God is faithful!
