Rev'd Shane's sermon for Trinity Sunday.

An extract:
All over the world, catastrophic headlines darken our days. Many of us are tired, heartsick, anxious, and overwhelmed. Some of us are ill. Some of us are mourning loved ones who have died. Some of us are facing economic uncertainty or ruin. Some of us are devastated by the divisions and inequalities that infect our communities. Some of us are angry about what’s happening in our national and global politics. Some of us are barely hanging onto belief in one God. Now the Church wants us to contemplate three? Why?

If you’re like me and been in the church a while, you’ve been at the receiving end (or the giving end) of many well-meaning but inadequate attempts to explain the Triune God: “Oh, well, the Trinity is sort of like water! You know, liquid, v***r, and ice? Three phases, one entity? The Trinity is like that!” Or “Think of a tree! The roots, the trunk, and the branches. Three parts, one tree. Or an egg. The shell, the egg white, and the yolk. Or a triangle. Or St. Patrick’s shamrock: three petals, one clover. Or (courtesy of John Wesley), three candles in a room, one light by which to read.

All of these analogies — beautiful though they are — fall short, and none of them address the deeper question: Why should we care? What difference does the three-in-one make? Fine, God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So what? Given the state our world is in right now, why should the Christian doctrine of the Trinity matter?

A prayer for us all this Sorry Day

"Forgive us, Lord, for the sins of our nation;
For pride that would not listen, for power that did not protect,
For silence that became complicity."

On National Sorry Day, we bring you a prayer written by Larissa Minniecon, our Truth-telling and Reconciliation Missioner.
May our good intentions become genuine action for change.

A Prayer for National Sorry Day – 26th May, 2026

Almighty God,
Whose Son Jesus Christ wept with those who weep and bore upon himself the weight of human sin.
We come before you this day with humble and repentant hearts.
Today we acknowledge the deep wounds inflicted upon our First Nations brothers and sisters of this land –
The children taken from their mother’s arms,
The father returning home to only footprints,
The families scattered across this nation,
The languages that were silenced,
The violence inflicted on the innocence,
The spirits broken by the hand of those who should have shown mercy.

Forgive us, Lord, for the sins of our nation;
For pride that would not listen, for power that did not protect,
For silence that became complicity.

We give thanks for the courage of the Stolen Generations –
For those who survived, who remembered, who spoke,
And who have carried a burden not of their own making.
Grant them, we pray, the deep healing that only you can give.
Stir within us, O God, more than sorrow;
Kindle in our hearts a burning sense of justice, that our sorry may become action, and our words may be made of flesh, spoken in how we live.
Guide the leaders and our citizens of this nation in the paths of truth and reconciliation, that all Australians;

May we walk together on the ancient and sacred ground of this great nation - with honesty, with humility and with hope.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who makes all things new. Amen

For this Pentecost, instead of a sermon we will hear from many voices of our community speaking of how the Spirit sustains their lives and the practices of faith that open this channel. As you listen, you will discern not only the great diversity in community which is the gift of the Spirit, but also some themes.
We are one body, sharing in one Spirit and this means that we have two movements always at work. As Stephen Boyd expresses it;
We have the ability to “remain in”— to develop the intellectual, emotional, spiritual gifts that God has given us and that the world needs from us. We also have the ability to “flow out”—to reach out, to connect to others, to offer them our gifts, and to receive from them the gifts only they can give. The more we “remain in,” the more effective we are at both giving what others need from us and receiving what we need from them. The more deeply we relate to others in this necessary exchange of gifts, the richer our internal, personal resources and lives. In this human and divine exchange, the Holy Spirit blossoms.
(Stephen B Boyd, 'Feasting on the Word: Year A')

There are another two movements always at work in the life of members of the body of Christ - freedom in the Spirit versus structure and order. This is a tension always present in the history of the church and one that if we can hold creatively, can birth great liberation. From the earliest days of the Church experiencing the life in the Spirit, we see the breakdown of the Jew and Gentile divide, a pushback against sexism and racism, and the movement towards economic sharing and a more communal life. At the same time we notice the movement of structure and order to direct and sustain the life of the Church.
Both are needed and both are at play here at St Andrew’s. And so we hear from the many voices of our community…reflecting movements of remaining in and flowing out, emphasising in different ways, both freedom and order.

For this Pentecost, instead of a sermon we will hear from many voic...

Deep Dive Bible Study Series: The Psalms

Online tomorrow: Sunday 24 May at 7pm. TIME #

This series is designed to introduce you to Bible scholars talking about one of the books of the Bible they have extensively studied and written about.

Meant for everyone, from new Christians to lifetime Bible readers, these sessions offer the chance to hear from the expert about the background of the text, the context of the times, and the themes and meaning for our lives today. After a short overview, these online sessions will give plenty of chance for a Q & A.

Our parish has been trialling Matthew’s new translation of the Psalms in worship.

Matthew’s deep knowledge of these songs, poems and prayers will help anyone who has ever wondered what we are to make of them, or how they could speak today. Matthew will talk about the objectives of his translation, which include translating into contemporary Australian English, attending to the musicality and rhythm of the spoken and sung word, and incorporation of contemporary Psalms scholarship.
