Maydale Social Garden

Maydale Social Garden We hope to have 'farm gate' sales with the profit given back to the society to enable the continuation of the project.

With seed funding provided by GJ Gardner Homes in 2016, the Maydale Social Garden is supported by the Centre for Participation and managed by the Horsham Ag Society, providing a space to upskill and support people of all abilities. The land for use has been offered to provide a space for school students to learn about a garden environment and also for the community to participate in whatever capac

ity they find. The land situated at the Horsham Showgrounds which is on Crown Land is managed by the Horsham Showgrounds Committee of Management with the day to day operation by the Horsham Agricultural Society (HAS) who as such, are project managers of the GJ Garden Homes Community Garden. GJ Gardner Homes have made a significant contribution for this to be an ongoing project, so while the opening is May 20, local schools and the community are welcome and encouraged to continue using the space for the remainder of the year in the years to come. Currently the schools students involved are from St Brigid's College Year 11 VCAL and Grades 3/4 at St. Michaels & St Johns Catholic Primary School.

The sun is shining this morning but it wasn’t earlier this week! With galeforce winds and much needed rain, our poor shade sail took a dive!

The rest of the garden is looking healthy thanks to Wayne, our groundsman.

If you want to add to our garden with vegetables, feel free to drop in. If you want to pick veggies or herbs, you’re most welcome. Produce is a bit light on over winter but there’s some lemons and sage is prolific at the moment.

A beautiful morning in the garden as we keep plants hydrated for the oncoming hot weather this weekend.

If you’re passing and you think something needs a drink, feel free to water it.

Don’t be like the lady in the red car on Thursday who was passing and stole a scarecrow! She didn’t want to talk to me when I approached her!!!

On this day 8 years ago, preparation on the original site for the Maydale Social began. Without the support of G.J. Gardner Homes Australia this project would never taken off.

Today it’s on a new space at Maydale Reserve and is still being loved and cared for.

👋 Meet Ros and Ray 👋

🌱Ros started with us as a participant on a volunteer program for over 55’s with the Horsham Ag Society about five months ago.

🌱 Ros chose to volunteer in the Maydale Social Garden and tend the plants around the hub at Maydale Reserve.

🌱 Having someone working 15 hours a week in the garden has opened up a brilliant opportunity for us to plant some fresh herbs and vegetables for the upcoming fundraiser for the Ag Society, the 150km Feast.

🌱 Ros is a bundle of energy and will warmly welcome you to the garden, if you’re lucky enough to catch her there!

🥬 Ray and his wife used to camp at the showgrounds for the annual fishing competition.

🥬 Ray and his wife have now retired to live in Horsham.

🥬 Ray attended the seniors expo in town in October, where we had a display. Ray found out about our gardening program and has now joined us as a volunteer.

🥬 Ray loves gardening and while he loves growing flowers, he’s a wizard at growing veggies too, already raising seedlings at home to plant in the garden.

🥬🌱 Between the two of them their input into our garden is invaluable. So let’s have a big shoutout to Ros and Ray as we say THANK YOU 👏👏

Yesterday we ventured out and attended the Horsham U3A’s seniors expo at the Horsham Town Hall.

This was an opportunity to promote a new volunteer program we’re running.

The Maydale Social Garden & 150km Feast Volunteer Gardening Project’s purpose is to provide some ingredients for the menu at the 150km Feast and for the market the following day, by growing a selection of vegetables and herbs in our social garden.

Volunteers are inducted through a familiarisation tour of the historical Maydale Reserve precinct before planting, cultivating and harvesting begins in the garden.

Established in February 2021, the 150km Feast is an award-winning outdoor dining experience which celebrates the wine & food producers within 150km of Horsham. It gathers food lovers from across the country for a two-day festival with the signature dinner on the last Saturday of February annually, before the finale on Sunday which combines a food truck and wine festival showcasing local wineries, breweries, distilleries and food producers alongside an artisan market.

The 150km Feast aims to uncover the food bowl which lies at the foothills of The Grampians and provide greater opportunities for people to really feel a sense of belonging in the community by helping at the festival itself.

A harvest festival like no other, celebrating good food, good wine and good company on the banks of the Wimmera River at Maydale Reserve.

Find your community in the Maydale Social Garden with the Horsham Agricultural Society.

If you’re interested in joining us week days, send us a message. We’d love to hear from you. ❤️
