Nikini Full Moon Poya Day
marks the sacred August full moon and commemorates the First Buddhist Council,
the attainment of arahantship by Venerable Ananda, and the start of the later rains retreat (Pasu Vas) for monks.

Key Historical Events

First Buddhist Council
(Paṭhama Sangayana)
Convened at Rajagaha under the leadership of Venerable Mahakassapa around 543 BCE, roughly three months after the Buddha’s Parinirvana. About 500 enlightened monks (arahants) gathered to recite and preserve the Buddha’s teachings (Dhamma and Vinaya).

Enlightenment of Venerable Ānanda: On the night before the First Council, the Buddha's personal attendant, Ānanda, attained full arahantship after a night of intense mental effort so he could participate as a fully realized monk.

Enlightenment of Venerable Rahula, The Buddha's son, Venerable Rahula, also attained the supreme state of arahanthood on a Nikini Poya day.
