Today, we remember the blessed end of the Forerunner of the Lord, Saint John the Baptist.

John’s service consisted in being a prophet; that is, he told people of God’s will, which comes with repentance: Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

And he performed his service to the end; he was faithful to God to the death. Most of the prophets, and all but one apostle, were killed. Why does this usually happen to prophets? Because man has turned away from God and his will goes against God’s will, resisting it.

O Holy Prophet and Forerunner John, pray to God for us, that we may truly repent and follow the will of God!

On this day, we honour the patron Saint of our parish bookshop - St Seraphim Rose.
It is 44 years since his repose in our Lord Jesus Christ.

You were transfigured on the mountain, O Christ God,
Revealing Your glory to Your disciples as far as they could bear it.
Let Your everlasting Light also shine upon us sinners,
Through the prayers of the Theotokos.
O Giver of Light, glory to You!

Let us also be transfigured from darkness to light, from sin to a virtuous life, from disobedience to God’s will to the possibility of its complete fulfillment; let us be transfigured not by our external life but our internal life, the life of our immortal soul.

The purpose of godlike beings known as humans is one: to become gradually perfect as God the Father, to become a god by grace, to attain theosis, deification.

But how is this goal to be attained? Through the evangelic virtues of faith and love, hope and prayer, fasting and humility, meekness and compassion, love of God and neighbour.

Pursuing these virtues, man transfigures his deformed soul, making it beautiful; it is transformed from something dark into something Godlike. He transfigures his body into a temple that can accommodate his Godlike soul.
