In this Sunday's gospel passage, โJesus rejoiced in the Holy Spiritโ (v21). His source of joy was that his message of good news was being preached, and many were listening and accepting it. Success in oneโs efforts is always a joy!
Jesus came with message of good news. He dedicated his life, to the point of death, to ensure people understood the love, mercy and forgiveness of God. It was a vital message that Jesus wanted to share to enable people to live full lives in hope and love for one another. His work had transformative appeal and was necessary if humanity was to advance in greater self-awareness and positive behaviour. God, through Jesus, so wanted to offer people a hopeful vision of life. God wanted to draw ever nearer to humanity.
So, let's think about the importance of Jesusโ joy in today's Gospel from another angle. What would be the outcome if people did not hear the good news or accept Jesusโ teachings? And there are many that don't or never have had an opportunity to know the riches of the Christian tradition. We read that many, โDesired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear itโ (v24).
For us, who have accepted Jesus and his teachings in our lives, we are truly blessed. We are open to possibilities of hope and love. We experience grace and enjoy the community of believers. Others do not have a perspective on life that we do, and it is something that is missing.
If Jesusโ teachings really matter, then it is our honour to live them out in our day to day lives, and our obligation to share these blessings with others. Amen.
