Imagine you’re just a teenager from a back-alley town that very few people have ever heard of, a place people ignored because of its association with something shameful that had happened long ago.

Imagine being that teenager and then being commissioned out of the blue by God for a ministry that will see you proclaim judgment to the nation of Judah, and then to the whole world, a ministry that will see you hated and despised, resulting in attempts being made on your life?

Imagine being reassured that God will give you everything you need to speak God’s word into the lives of people who prefer lying prophets to the truth of God’s word?

Now that you have that in your head, welcome to Jeremiah 1, where we see all these things unfold as God’s prophet recalls his commissioning by God, while also giving us a glimpse into “What God gives to and expects from His people”.

This week, we’re kicking off a 6-week series with the Old Testament Prophet, Jeremiah.

Often seen quoted, usually out of context, on inspirational Christian fridge magnets, this book has so much more to teach us than many realise.

This is because this wonderful book documents the reflections and ministry of one remarkable individual who served at a time when life for God’s faithful people was really tough. This means it’s really helpful for people living in a world that seems increasingly determined to run away from God.

Jeremiah will teach us many things, but throughout we will see our God working to fulfil his promises, both the good and the more difficult ones, because his promises are unbreakable.

This week we’re looking at chapter one, which you can read here 👉🏻 https://www.esv.org/Jeremiah+1/

Are you a planner? Love to organise things? If you are, then there is almost nothing worse than a disorganised person… someone who has no idea what they’re doing.

Taking responsibility for your life is a good and biblical principle, but this week, as we’re in our last week in James, we’re going to be reminded that this can quickly lead to self-sufficiency, which overlooks the fact that God is ultimately in control.

As we finish this book, James will tell us that in all seasons we need to place our hopes, our faith, and our dependence on God, not on ourselves. This is because, while we have all sorts of limitations, He is completely dependable and will always work for our good, even if that simply means providing a way for us to reach His perfect heaven.

One of the wonderful things about the Bible is how it uses the most unlikely and often ignored people in society (usually women and children) to show us what is real and true in this life and the next.

God often shows us through these people that His kingdom is very different from the power-hungry kingdoms of this world, because it is an upside-down kingdom, one where the proud are humbled, and the humble are raised up.

This week, we’re moving along in James, and he’s going to speak to us about how we are to live as God’s upside-down people in light of His coming upside-down kingdom.

So far in James, we have learned a number of important things.

In chapter one, we were encouraged to have a genuine faith in Jesus, which shows itself in how we trust and how we live. In the last two weeks, as we’ve looked at James 2, we have seen him flesh this out in two specific areas.

Firstly, because the Church is God’s treasured possession, we must never do anything that will harm it. Instead, we will do everything we can to care for God’s people.

Secondly, just as God’s word is living and active, our faith should be alive, motivating us to work for the good of others.

This Sunday, we turn to chapter 3, and James brings these two topics together to tell us that we need to be very careful with how we speak, because our words have a great capacity to cause damage.

Have you ever said something that you regretted later? If the answer is not “YES”, then I am very sorry, but you're lying! So, this week we’re going to hear James speak to us so we can be wise when we open our mouths, in order that we are people who build others up with the words we speak.

In Armidale airport, there’s a copy of the front page of the local paper from Wednesday, April 29, 1970, hung on the wall. This edition of the paper was celebrating Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s visit to town the day before.

What caught my eye, though, was a 69-word article (also on the front page) complaining that while it appeared to the royals that Armidale was a beautiful town, all the organisers had done was hide anything unsightly from the Royals’ view!

This week at church, we’re in the second half of James 2, and I reckon our lives can be a bit like Armidale in April 1970. We have a habit of presenting a clean, washed version of ourselves to others, hoping it will earn esteem among our neighbours. Appearance and reality can look entirely different.

But this week, James, as God’s word, is going to tell us that when it comes to saving faith, appearances alone are worthless. He even says that knowledge of God that doesn’t recognise and submit to God as King is the “faith” of demons!

In the face of this, James will encourage us to have a faith that saves, which means recognising that God is the King and that all of life should flow from the abundant grace he has shown us.

🌄 LEST WE FORGET 🌄

Isaiah 2 encourages us to “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.”

"He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord.”

In light of this, we pray...

Almighty God, the destinies of rulers and every nation are in your hands. Yet in your infinite goodness and mercy, you watch over the fatherless and the lonely, the poor and the oppressed. You offer strength to the weak and comfort to those who mourn.

And so on this day when we remember those who have served us in times of conflict…

- We pray that you might give wisdom to those in authority, that through their leadership the horrors of war might be avoided, and peace may prevail whenever possible.

- We give you thanks for the sacrifice of those who have served this land during times of conflict. Comfort and sustain those who continue to suffer the ill effects of their service.

- Protect those currently in active duty, and in time, may they safely return home. Strengthen the families of our service men and women, granting them peace in times of worry and comfort in times of grief.

- Uphold the work of the RSL, especially our local Sub-branch. In their efforts, may our Service men, women, and their families find the support they need.

- And we pray for ourselves. Make us a people who are zealous for peace, and hasten the day when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, nor learn war any longer.

This we ask in the name of your son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave his life to bring us peace with you, our God and heavenly Father. Amen.

In the church of the living God, our Heavenly Father has brought together an incredible and diverse group of people through Jesus. It’s a group whom Jesus died for, and it’s also a group that God describes throughout the Bible as His treasured possession.

But how are we to behave as we are part of this group? More importantly, how are we NOT to behave?

This week, we’re in James 2:1-13, where he helps us with these questions, ultimately instructing us to act towards others in God’s family in ways that commend the Gospel of Jesus to anyone we come into contact with.

We all crave authenticity. We like our relationships and friendships to be real. We know how good it is to eat a warm home-cooked meal. We crave honest and authentic politicians.

We know this to be true because of what it feels like when the wool is pulled over our eyes. Realising that something isn’t genuine is never a pleasant experience.

But what about us? Are we authentic? Does what we believe match up with what we say and do? It's easy to look the part while being a completely different story on the inside.

This Sunday, we're starting a new series in James. James was the brother of Jesus, and if you know the story of the Bible, it should surprise us that we have a letter from him to the Christian church. John 7:5 tells us that Jesus’ “… own brothers did not believe in him.”

But as this unlikely disciple writes, he will show us where true wisdom is found and tell us that knowing it is not enough (even Demons know this wisdom); we need to live transformed lives in response to it. We need to have “Faith that works”.
