The Feast of Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the beginning of the Church’s mission to spread the Gospel to all nations. It is celebrated fifty days after Easter and is often called the “birthday of the Church.”
In the Bible, the Apostles were gathered together when the Holy Spirit descended upon them like “tongues as of fire” and filled them with courage and wisdom. They began speaking in different languages so that people from many nations could understand the message of Jesus. This event is described in Acts of the Apostles 2:1–4.
Jesus had promised the coming of the Holy Spirit before His Ascension:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses…”
— Acts of the Apostles 1:8
For the Catholic Church, Pentecost reminds believers that the Holy Spirit guides, strengthens, and unites the Church. The gifts of the Holy Spirit — wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord — help Catholics live as followers of Christ (see Isaiah 11:2–3).
