🌿 A new feast for the Church: the Festival of Creation in Christ

Today at Christ Church Cathedral in Grafton we join Christians around the world in celebrating God as Creator, and giving thanks for the beauty, goodness and diversity of all creation.

This year is particularly significant as we embrace the Festival of Creation in Christ, a new addition to our Anglican liturgical calendar.

The name matters. We celebrate not only the gift of creation, but Christ’s place within the great story of creation: the one through whom all things came into being, in whom all things hold together, and through whom God is reconciling all things.

This short video from the Church of England explains a little of the story behind this new feast, and why Christians are being invited to celebrate it.

As we begin the Season of Creation, may we see the world afresh as creation in Christ - made through Christ, held together in Christ, and being drawn in Christ towards the fullness of God’s purposes for all creation. 🌏🌿

“The ground didn’t suddenly become holy when Moses took off his shoes. It was holy the whole time.”

Preaching for the Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Archdeacon Emeritus Gail Hagon reflects on Moses and the burning bush - and his willingness to stop, turn aside and look again.

In doing so, Moses discovers the sacred in the ordinary: God present, God waiting, God calling.

As spring begins, Archdeacon Gail invites us to slow down and look again: to expect to encounter God in creation, in one another, and in the ordinary events of our lives; to remember that we, too, stand on holy ground; and to hear God’s call to be agents of love in the world.

Please join us in praying for the people of Nepal following catastrophic flash floods.

On 26 August, collapsing glacial ice and rock near the Nepal-China border unleashed a torrent of water, mud and debris through Himalayan valleys. Communities in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts are among the worst affected. Hundreds of people have died, many hundreds remain missing and homes, roads, bridges and places of worship have been destroyed or damaged. Rescue work continues amid the risk of further flooding.

The Anglican Church in Nepal has asked for urgent prayer, following reports that pastors and members of local churches are among those who have died or remain missing. Several churches have also been damaged.

Please pray for all those still unaccounted for, those who are grieving and families in urgent need of shelter, food, clean water and medicine. Pray also for pastors and church leaders serving devastated communities, and for all those leading rescue and relief efforts.

God of compassion,
draw near to the people of Nepal.
Comfort those who mourn,
protect those who remain in danger,
strengthen those searching for the missing
and sustain all who are serving their neighbours.
Bring help, healing and hope to every affected community.
Amen.
