On Sunday, we had the privilege of welcoming one of our most special guest speakers, Ken Lesta.

Ken faithfully served as our Senior Pastor for more than 35 years, leading our church from its early days until he passed the baton of leadership to Pastor Andrew. We remain deeply grateful for the way God used both Ken and his wife, Barnetta, through their love for the Lord, their care for His people, and their faithful example of the Christian life.

We trust the service was an encouragement and blessing to you and your family.

We look forward to seeing you again next Sunday! 🙌

No Coveting | Commandment No.10

“You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, nor his servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour’s” (Ex. 20:17). Covetousness is a hidden sin that silently and subtly grips us. We can so easily and quickly become greedy when we are not content with what we have.

In Colossians 3:5 Paul shows that covetousness lies behind many other sins: “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” These sins flow from covetousness. What begins in the heart as a wrong desire for what is not ours develops into evil desire, unrestrained passion, uncleanness of thought, and even sexual immorality.

Why do we covet? Because we are not content with what we have. Yet the Christian lacks nothing in Christ. In Him we have the supreme Lord who gives us complete fullness, fellowship, and forgiveness (Col. 2:8–15). To covet is to live as though Christ is not enough.

After raising the sin of covetousness, Paul concludes: “which is idolatry.” This shows that covetousness is not a small matter, but distorted worship, where the heart turns from Christ and gives its devotion to something else. Are you resting content in Christ, or are you desiring what God hasn’t given you?

It is with both deep gratitude and genuine joy that we say goodbye to Dante DeVilla as he steps into his new role as Pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Dundas Valley.

Dante and his family have been dearly loved members of Emmanuel, and his faithful service over many years has left a lasting mark on our church. From serving as treasurer to faithfully shepherding as an elder over the past few years, Dante has been a steady, wise, and gracious presence among us.

We are especially thankful for the way he has opened God’s Word, teaching in Bible studies, leading classes, mentoring young men and families, and investing personally in so many. His care for the church, his integrity, and his quiet faithfulness in every responsibility have been a true gift to us.

While we will deeply miss Dante and his family, we rejoice in God’s kindness in calling him to serve at Faith Baptist. They are gaining a faithful shepherd, and we are thankful to have had a part in his journey. We send him with our love, our prayers, and great confidence in the work God has ahead.

To God be the glory. May He continue to raise up faithful men to proclaim the gospel.

No False Witness | Commandment No.8

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour” (Ex. 20:16). Our words carry great power, so we must be careful in what, when, and how we speak. Thomas Watson noted that “God has set two fences to keep in the tongue, the teeth and the lips, that it should not break out.” This commandment calls us to comprehensive truthfulness, guiding both what we must not say and what we must say.

Paul exhorts, “Therefore, putting away lying, ‘Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbour,’ for we are members of one another” (Eph. 4:25). Lying includes exaggeration, slander, flattery, and misrepresenting God’s Word or others. The devil is the father of lies (John 8:44), while God does not lie (Num. 23:19), the Lord Jesus is “the truth” (John 14:6), and the Spirit is “the Spirit of truth” (John 14:17).

Truthfulness preserves unity as members of one body. The Westminster Larger Catechism (Q.144) teaches it involves preserving and promoting the truth and the good name of our neighbour and ourselves.

This commandment exposes our hearts: “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matt. 12:34). Look to the Lord Jesus, the faithful and true witness (Rev. 3:14). In Him we find forgiveness for false words and grace to speak truth from a renewed heart as the word of Christ dwells in us richly (Col. 3:16–17).

Are your words truthful? Do they reflect the God of truth? Let us speak to the glory of Christ.
