🇦🇺🇷🇴 14 September – The Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Today, the Church celebrates the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a feast centred not on the material of the Cross itself, but on Christ’s sacrifice and His victory over death.
A common question is why Christians venerate the Cross and why this is not considered idolatry. The Church’s answer is clear: Christians do not worship wood, metal, or the physical object itself. The honour given to the Cross is directed to Christ, who was crucified upon it. This distinction was formally expressed by the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which taught that true worship belongs to God alone, while the honour shown to a sacred image or symbol passes to the reality it represents.
The Cross is therefore not a talisman and has no independent power apart from God. For Christians, it is the sign of Christ’s love carried to the point of sacrifice, and also the sign of the Resurrection that follows the Cross. That is why an instrument of Roman ex*****on became, in Christianity, a symbol of hope and victory.
The Church makes an important distinction between veneration and worship: the Cross is venerated, but God alone is worshipped. The same principle applies to icons: honour is not directed to wood and paint, but to the person represented.
So when a Christian makes the sign of the Cross or kisses a Cross, the meaning is not “I believe in this object,” but rather: I believe in Christ crucified and risen.
