Lettuce Pray

Lettuce Pray Lettuce Pray is a part of van Gent ministries, giving devotions in a simple weekly format... and they are brief. Lettuce Pray is written by Jacob van Gent. AMEN

It provides a short daily devotional based on the lectionary readings for the coming Sunday. It is especially meant for those who cannot attend Church or don't have the time to read the longer devotions. Also there are Meditations based on Bible Passages (coming soon). A Prayer for Everyday:

Every day I need you, Lord, but this day specially. I need some extra strength to face whatever is to be

This day more than any other day I need to feel You near me - to strengthen my courage and overcome my fear. By myself I cannot meet the challenge of the hour. There are times when people need a higher Power - to help them endure what is to be. And so, Dear Lord, I pray, hold onto my trembling hand and be with me today.

Christmas 2 Naming of Jesus # Year A © Jacob van Gent 2025

Monday 29th December 2025. Read Jeremiah 31:7-14. Let us spend today rejoicing in what the Lord has given us, His Son. Let us proclaim His grace to all. Let us be patient, as God is, with ourselves, those around us and with God as we wait for His Kingdom to once again come.

Tuesday 30th December 2015. Read Psalm 147:12-20. Look back over 2019 and reflect on the times when you knew God was with you. Now remember that God is always with you and look back to recall the times when you were not aware of His grace and love on your life.

Wednesday 31st December 2025. Read Galatians 4:4-7 #. There is something about this reading that really touches me. I am an heir to the Kingdom of God. I have been given the Holy Spirit into my heart who cries out "Abba, Father!' God is the perfect Father, full of grace. He has sent His perfect Son to live and die for us. Reflect on this for a while and allow it to sink in.

Thursday 1st January 2026. Read Luke 2:15-21. I wonder what The Shepherds would have done in this day and age. Facebook their experience, text someone, travel to see Mary and her Baby and again Facebook or Instagram what they saw. Certainly, they were in awe of what they experienced as we should be. Spread the word, Jesus has come to save humankind.

In contrast we, through Jesus Christ, have the promise of new life forever, a great and wonderful hope, and the grace of God.

Sunday 4th January 2026. Read Luke 2:15-21. Let the Year of 2026 the year to spread the Word to everyone about Jesus Christ, the Lord and Saviour of the world. I pray that you have a renewing and blessed 2026.

He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.

God has chosen us to be saved, to be His people. We are all equal as we are all chosen equally in Christ. There is no such thing as a special Christian. We are all saved by the grace and love of God.

Sunday 9th November 2025. Read Luke 20:27-38. What is of this world will be different at the resurrection. We worry about worldly things like marriage, wealth, things, etc. On our death and our resurrection we will be ‘like Angels’. We will not have the worries of this life, but the eternal joy of life with God. Praise God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

But now be strong … declares the LORD ... Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the LORD, ‘and work. For I am with you,’ declares the LORD Almighty. ‘This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’

Tuesday 28th October 2025. Read Psalm 149:1-9. Why not dance and sing to the Lord today?

Wednesday 29th October 2025. Read Luke 19:1-10. WOW!!! Jesus Talks to, cares for and interacts with sinners. There is hope for me. Thank God.

Thursday 30th October 2025. Read Ephesians 1:11-14. Jesus Christ is the center of God's plan for us, the world, the universe. Thank God for sending Jesus Christ into our life, for His personal relationship with you and for the creation He has planned and made.

Friday 31st October 2025. Read Ephesians 1:15-19a,19b-23. Pray this prayer for someone you know who has faith in Jesus Christ. Read this again and feel God's greatness

Saturday 1st November 2025. Read 2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11,12. Pray for someone today. Pray that their faith may be empowered by God more and more each day. Pray that Jesus Christ will be glorified in them and them in Christ.

Monday 29th September 2025. Read Lamentations 1:1-6. Is there any hope? Where is God? Lamentations is a series of Laments recalling the sorrows of God's People, Israel. Their only hope is in God, and they have turned away from Him. Are there laments in your life? Turn to God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Let Christ bring hope and joy back into your life.

Monday 8th September 2025. Read Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22. It must hurt the Lord when people go against Him. Especially those who call Him Lord and do their own thing. I fall into that category at times. Only through God's grace can I go on with hope. Did you know that Jeremiah is the longest book in the Bible?

Tuesday 9th September 2025. Read Jeremiah 4:23-28. Life without God is desolate. God gives life to the living. Walk with Him, hold His hand, He won't let go. If you think God has let go, then think again it is you who let go. Hold your hands out and He will grab them and lead you back.

Wednesday 10th September 2025. Read Psalm 14. We live in a corrupt world, where God is often not taken into consideration. Pray that our leaders and those who shape the world’s future, stop, and seek God’s guidance and then do things God’s way.

Thursday 11th September 2025. Read 1 Timothy 1:12-14. Thank Jesus Christ for His grace, mercy, love, and care for you. I know that I can forget who is leading me and go my own way at times. Then I stop, give thanks to God, and continue in Jesus Christ.

Friday 12th September 2025. Read 1 Timothy 1:15-17. Only in the Pastoral letters does the saying "here is a trustworthy saying" occur. Indeed, I can relate to how much grace Jesus Christ has given to me. I need a lot.

Saturday 13th September 2025. Read Luke 15:1-7. Are you a lost sheep? God is out there searching for you. Come out and let yourself be found. Are you one of the righteous? Then go and tell the lost that God is there searching. Go and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to all.

Sunday 14th September 2025. Read Luke 14.12 23 The coin here is equal to one day's average wage. Something we would search for. Jesus Christ came to save sinners. Turn around, repent. Rejoice with the Angels for those who come to Jesus Christ and are saved.

“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst."

Pentecost 13 Sunday 23 Copyright Jacob van Gent 2025

Monday 1st September 2025. Read Jeremiah 18:1-11. We all have sinful rebellious natures. God gives us chances and chances and chances. God will bless the things we do that follow His ways. God will not be involved in the wrongful things we do. If God is not in it, then you be sure that it will not succeed. God understands our humanness, but that is no excuse. God has given us the grace and power to step out of our human ways and be more like Him. We are holy because Jesus Christ is holy.

Tuesday 2nd September 2025. Read Psalm 139:1-6. God knows us better than we know ourselves. In this present day and age, we could say that God is breaching the privacy laws. But that is how it is. God knows, and cares about each and every one of us. God, in His infinite wisdom has given us all a way to be better equipped to live on this earth.
God wants only the best for us. Don’t try to hide from God. Instead, be open and allow God to take charge of your life. Let go and let God.

Wednesday 3rd September 2025. Read Psalm 139:13-18. We will never totally understand the ways of God. We will never fully know the greatness of the living God who sent His Son to die for all humankind. All we really need to know is that God loved the world so much that …. Read John 3:16-17.

Thursday 4th September 2025. Read Philemon 1-7. Philemon was a prominent Christian whose slave had run away. Paul, a prisoner, is writing to Philemon to beg that he takes his slave, Onesimus, back and forgives his disobedience. Onesimus had become a Christian whilst on the run and had realised the errors of his ways. So we have a runaway slave being supported by a prisoner returning and asking forgiveness from a master who seems to be high up in the community. This would make a good movie.

Friday 5th September 2025. Read Philemon 8-21. In the last two days you have read a whole book of the New Testament. There is a lot in this book, but what strikes me is Paul calling Onesimus his son. Paul was the one who led Onesimus to the Lord and Paul is the one who has become his spiritual father. I wonder if there is someone whom we could adopt as our spiritual child.

Saturday 6th September 2025. Read Luke 14:25-30. I have an unfinished model of the USS Enterprise at home. I started it about 5 years ago and never got past gluing together the little aeroplanes. If we want to go with Jesus Christ and be His disciples, we must go all the way. Nothing is too tedious or too small in His service. We must be prepared to go as far as He asks. Jesus Christ will not push us further than we can go, although we limit how far we will go.

Sunday 7th September 2025. Read Luke 14:25-27,31-33. We need to give up everything when we follow Christ. Once we are on the walk with Him, there is no going back. We must leave behind all that seemed worth while and learn the worthwhile things are in Jesus Christ. Take up your cross and follow Him. It is not as hard as it sounds. Jesus Christ is not a hard taskmaster; He will bless us with more than we can imagine.

Psalm 139:1 NIV
O LORD, you have examined me, and you know me.

Lettuce Pray Salad for your Soul

Pentecost 11 Sunday 21 © Jacob van Gent 2025

Monday 18th August 2025. Read Hebrews 12:18-24. Even though it may seem we are at a point where all is doom and gloom, the fact is that God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit are there, and all is to be made perfect. You can touch God; you can speak with God; God is there for you … YES! You. Praise The Lord.

Tuesday 19th August 2025. Read Hebrews 12:25-29. Our faith needs to be firm in Jesus Christ. Many will try to steer us away from Christ. Stay firm. Don't be shaken. Even those who mean well, if they don't know Jesus Christ, can steer us down the wrong path. Study God's word. Listen to God's Word. Don't be shaken from your walk with God.

Wednesday 20th August 2025. Read Jeremiah 1:4-10. God knew us before we were made. His plan for us is to be His people. A people who spread Good News, not unrealistically, but Good News in a world where bad news, doom and gloom are abundant. Don't be afraid of speaking the truth, God is with you.

Thursday 21st August 2025. Read Psalm 71:1-3. We can be sure that in God we have a sure and solid foundation, a place where we are safe, even in times of great troubles, God is with us and in us.

Friday 22nd August 2025. Read Psalm 71:4-6. Here, again, we read of God being with us in the womb, as in Jeremiah (and other places). God has been with us from the start even though we might not know it. God is with us always. Let Him guide you. Take refuge in Him.

Saturday 23rd August 2025. Read Luke 13:10-13. Wow! Just imagine being there. You are sitting next to this bent over woman, maybe you feel for her. "Poor old lady" you say. Then, out of the blue, the preacher (Jesus Christ) says to this woman that she is healed. She stands up straight. All are amazed. How do you react to this?

Sunday 24th August 2025. Read Luke 13:14-17. Rules, rules, rules. God has some rules for living. … Love God and love others with all you have got. Unfortunately, there are people who can't see past man-made rules. Do we heal on the Sabbath, or do we let someone die or suffer longer? To me the answer is clear.

" Let us be thankful, then, because we receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Let us be grateful and worship God in a way that will please him, with reverence and awe; because our God is indeed a destroying fire."
Heb. 12:28,29 GNT

Pentecost 9 Sunday 19 copyright. Jacob van Gent 2025

Monday 4th August 2025. Read Isaiah 1:1,10-14. It seems that God is not interested in false hood. God is only interested in real people with real concerns and a real desire to live and be holy. Let’s examine our motivations and get real.

Tuesday 5th August 2025. Read Isaiah 1:15-20. You know God means business when He says “I, the Lord, have spoken”. Turn away from your sins, wash away the stained parts of your life. How? Let Jesus Christ help you. He is the pure Lamb who was sacrificed for our sins. I find that people seem to forget this and either judge others and/or don’t forgive themselves. Be washed in the Blood of the Lamb. Accept the Grace of God.

Wednesday 6th August 2025. Read Psalm 50:1-8, 22-23. God is not interested in anything but true thanks. The people of Israel would worship God with burnt offerings and other things but would not give thanks. And yet, we are brought up to say ‘thankyou’.

Thursday 7th August 2025. Read Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16. How sure are you of God’s interest in you? To have faith is to go ahead and step out. It requires some risk taking. But then with God involved it is not really a risk. Go on, let God take charge. See the examples in this Book.

Friday 8th August 2025. Read Luke 9:28-36. Two points to ponder. Do we recognise Jesus Christ as God’s Son and do we listen to Him, as God has commanded? Let go of the worldly ways and listen to Jesus Christ. You will be transformed.

Saturday 9th August 2025. Read Luke 12:32-34. We always seem to want more. Pray and listen to Jesus Christ today. Where do your riches lie? You have all you need in Christ.

Sunday 10th August 2025. Read Luke 12:35-40. Are we ready? Only through Jesus Christ can we be ready. We must remain at the ready because the time is coming, and no-one knows when, when the Lord will return to gather His faithful people. I wonder what I will be up to when He comes back?

Heb. 11:1 NIV
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Pentecost 8 Sunday 18 . Jacob van Gent 2025

Monday 28th July 2025. Read Psalm 107:1-9. When someone does a kind or good thing for us, we are taught to say thankyou. We teach our kids to say thank you. How much more should we then say Thankyou to God. He has done for us more than we could ever expect. And yet, people forget to thank God. Start every prayer with the 1st verse of this Psalm.

Tuesday 29th July 2025. Read Psalm 107:1,43. Wisdom comes from God. Those who seek this wisdom will receive it and they will realise that it is good to remember all that God has done for us. Thank God for everything.

Wednesday 30th July 2025. Read Hosea 11:1-7. No matter how much we try to tell our children that they are going to get into trouble if they continue to go the way they are going, they often keep going that way. I have heard (and said) “these teenagers drive you mad they won’t listen and think they know it all”. I am sure that God says that about all of us. Ask for wisdom and follow God.

Thursday 31st July 2025. Read Hosea 11:8-11. No matter how upsetting our children get, we still love them. No matter how far they may move away, we still love. When they turn to us, we open our arms and welcome them back. Why? Because we love them. God loves His children, that is, us.

Friday 1st August 2025. Read Luke 12:13-21. Greed is in us all. In some way we build up our riches and we want more. Our real richness is in God. God supplies all we need, not all we want. God has given us riches in wisdom, in forgiveness in grace and in love. Where are our riches stored?

Saturday 2nd August 2025. Read Colossians 3:1-4. Where are our sights set? In a materialistic world like ours it is hard not to get confused as to where our values lie. Paul is speaking to the Colossians, a wealthy people who value what people have. Paul is saying that if we have Jesus Christ in our lives and set our sights on Him then we will not need or want more. Our wealth is in Jesus Christ.

Sunday 3rd August 2025. Read Colossians 3:5-11. Have we put away our past? Have we taken hold of the new life in Jesus Christ? Probably not fully. More and more we need to turn our attention to Jesus Christ and follow His ways. Christ is in us. When we do wrong, we hurt not only ourselves, we hurt others and God. Thank God for forgiveness, grace and new life in Jesus Christ.

Col.3:11b (GW)
Instead, Christ is everything and in everything.
