MANY…………WILL BE DECEIVED
Matt 24: 4 And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray.
Mark 13: 5Jesus began by telling them, “See to it that no one deceives you. 6Many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am He,’ and will deceive many.
Luke 21: 8And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them.
These three scriptures are the first of a litany of events that Jesus says will accompany the end of this age. In three gospels, this is the very first sign.
The passages of all three gospels go on to talk about war, famine, pestilence, earthquakes, and great signs in heaven. It’ s impossible to be definitive about whether these events described are chronological or just indications of what will happen but in no particular order.
But the very first thing mentioned by Jesus is widespread deception. I used to think that we were not at a point where we have people saying that they are Jesus. There are a few of these nutcases around, but they are not mainstream and have little influence besides with a small group of deluded followers.
I’m now beginning to wonder if this is actually what Jesus meant though. The word ‘Christ’ means ‘The Anointed One’ The other two say , ‘I am He’. So in essence these people are not saying they are Jesus, but that they come in His name, with a special anointing. It could be interpreted as someone who claims to have special status, an anointing above and beyond the anointing given to every and all true believers.
I think we have far more deception in the charismatic church than we do in denominational Christianity. It makes sense, because these churches chase the spiritual gifts & revival- so Satan targets these places as they have the most potential to do damage to his kingdom.
In all three scriptures, Jesus warns ‘see that you are not led astray’. This means he expects us to be vigilant about ALL teachings, no matter how mainstream they seem, and how many people accept them. Even if our own peer group accepts them. He says that ‘many’ will be deceived and be led astray. This is any one’s guess, but I would say well above 50%, maybe even up to 90% of the charismatic church in general has been led astray or deceived. And the root cause is because they follow a popular charismatic personality. Now when I say deceived, I don’t necessarily mean not saved.
Recent revelations about the charismatic church has exposed just how sick and depraved some of these people are.
In all practicality I would be very wary if you are listening to people or ministries’ with the following traits:
*Claim to be apostles or prophets with special insight and discernment that no other Christian has.
*Uses vague words like ‘apostolic alignment’ to manipulate obedience to them with their special powers of revelation and discernment. This is spiritual elitism.
*Declarations that a move of God, or revival cannot happen without them, (or at least someone in their network of spiritual elitists). If you research past revivals, you’ll see that the complete opposite is true. True revivalists avoided any form of elitism, at least in the beginning. But when man introduces their structures and hierarchies, what was once a revival waned away. God will not give His glory to man.
*The insinuation that disobedience to them or challenging their teaching is akin to resisting God or Jesus Himself.
*A heavy emphasis on submission or humility to the point of being out of balance, especially if the leader does not invite challenges and questioning from their followers.
*Over emphasis on ‘spiritual sons’ and ‘spiritual daughters’ language.
*A heavy emphasis on ‘honour’ culture. Normally in reality this means not to publicly questioning or challenging them and their teachings. It’s more about protecting their honour- not the principle itself.
*A large financial differential between a leader’s lifestyle and that of their followers. Rich leader, poor followers.
This is not an exhaustive list, but I think you get the drift of it.
Antidote to all of this:
• Reject the subtle premise in charismatic Christianity that platform = success in God’s eyes. Repent of this mindset.
• Read and interpret the scriptures for yourself. You have an anointing that teaches you. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you and guide you into all truth. You do not need a so-called apostle or prophet or some leader to interpret them for you. Ultimately, they should help with this, as that is the 5 folds role, but they should never be the final authority in your life for understanding and interpreting the scriptures. That’s the Holy Sprits role.
• Repent of any desire for popularity, accolades, recognition, promotion, influence- as James says these desires are earthly, soulish, downright demonic.
• Understand and know that you are a child of God. You are a son of God. He is your Father and he loves you. He has your back. Ask Jesus to reveal the Father to you. Once you get this revelation you will be utterly unshakeable, un-manipulatable.
• Never accept a teaching just because a few scriptures have been cited. If something troubles you about the teaching and how the scriptures are used, re-search it out. Ask God for clarity.
Lets, go back to the end times stuff again.
When Jesus warns about widespread deception, wars, earthquakes etc. in all three of these gospels (Matthew 25, Luke 21, Mark 13) – he warns NOT to be afraid, because the end is not yet. If you put these warnings together with Luke 21:8 ‘… the time is at hand’.
This implies that the church is going to be fascinated with the end times and people will begin to think and preach that His coming is imminent. They will not give specific dates but will insinuate that it’s a matter of a few years. And Jesus specifically says: BUT THE END IS NOT YET. We are warned not to think and believe like this!
In my opinion, I think it will be decades, if not a hundred years at least until the literal end. I think there will be a worldwide revival which will last a few decades, and then things will go south after that. But of course, we could be raptured up tomorrow and I could be proven wrong. So be it- those are my thoughts.
So all of this wrong believing and thinking can be repented of. We have a merciful loving God. That’s all we need to do. Just repent.
Amen and God Bless!
