A poem from Mike Hansen on the world day of Grandparents and Elderly

Romans 8: 38-39

Sometimes the assault seems relentless:

Loneliness seeps into us like winter cold,
Sickness saps the life blood of shared joy,
Our hearts weep when our children suffer,
The bonds of old friendships fray and slip,
Our body creaks like sun hardened leather,
Neighbours grow distant in times of need,
Visits to the pharmacy are more frequent,
We are shocked at the frailty of our old age,
Loved ones seem to shrink before our eyes,
Plump super accounts no longer offer surety,
Pain & loss hover like crows to sn**ch our hope,
… and Zimmer frames are starting to look attractive.

It seems to just be one thing after another!

And then you hear His voice in the silence:

It comes on ‘little cat feet’ nestling in your heart
It comes from Nick Cave… ‘into my arms, O Lord’
It comes gently through the genuine smile of a friend,
It comes steaming in a bowl of soup made just for you,
It comes like a bolt of lightning from the Sunday Gospel,
It comes oozing from those who know of your distress,
It comes from the wisdom of the foot soldiers
who have done battle in the highlands of affliction,
It comes from a word of concern that is said to us
that allows us to reveal and share our pain,
It can also come gently in the pre dawn…
resting quietly with the God of your Heart,
present to each other,
gentled by the assurance,
calmed by the solace
that you are the be-loved.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Paul of Tarsus
