FR GRAEME NAPIER KSJ
SENIOR ASSOCIATE PRIEST
It is a great joy to announce that Fr Graeme Napier KSJ has been appointed Senior Associate Priest in the Parish of Fortitude Valley.
Fr Graeme will conclude his commission as Rector of St John's in the Village, New York [STJVNY], NY, USA, at the end of September.
He will commence at Holy Trinity, Fortitude Valley, on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, Sunday, 4 October 2026.
Fr Graeme trained for the Priesthood at St Stephen's House, Oxford, UK, and served his Curacy at St Andrew's Cathedral, Inverness, UK, 1995-1998. He served as Assistant Priest (1998-2001) and then Acting Rector (2001-2) of Christ Church St Laurence, Sydney, Australia. He returned to the UK to be Succentor and Minor Canon of Westminster Abbey (2002-10), and then came back to Australia to be Precentor of St George's Cathedral, Perth (2010-16). Prior to his present appointment in New York, he was an Honorary Associate Priest at Cowley St John, Oxford, UK, while engaging in a year's academic study at Nashotah House, WI, USA.
His ministry at STJVNY aligns very closely with aspirations at Holy Trinity. Both there and in Perth, he developed liturgies to link church and civic celebrations. With his expertise in music, he expanded the choral life of the church, built the music ministry to include commissioning of liturgical music by international composers, and co-founded the New York Gregorian Chant Project. He has developed community meals and expanded fellowship at weekday services to attract non- and semi-churched locals. He worked with the Vestry (Parish Council) to transform the parish hall into an art gallery, and upgraded the parish's shared theatre space, making STJVNY a lively venue for the arts.
Fr Graeme read mathematics, philosophy, and theology at Magdalen College, Oxford, UK, where he and Fr Rodney were contemporaries (and chapel sacristans) almost 40 years ago! He is a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music; a Chevalier of the Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller (Brisbane Commandery); and a citizen of Australia, the UK, and the Republic of Ireland.
Do come to the Sung Mass at 9:30am on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi - Sunday, 4 October 2026 - to welcome Fr Graeme. (The rite of Confirmation will be offered by the Regional Bishop that day.) Then stay for a celebratory reception after Mass to welcome Fr Graeme.
