Holy Trinity, Fortitude Valley

Holy Trinity, Fortitude Valley Holy Trinity Anglican Church is an affirming and inclusive Christian community, and has offered worship and served the local and wider community since 1856.

Trinity is a Community of Anglicans and has offered worship and served the local and wider community since 1856. This is a church in the Catholic tradition of the Anglican Church where the worship is offered with great care, with celebration involving ceremonial and musical traditions. The Mass is at the heart of the Parish Community life. The present church was constructed in 1876/77, and nearby

Trinity Hall and the Rectory where the priests live replaced earlier buildings in 1891/1892. Now rather an oasis surrounded by both commercial and residential zones, Trinity maintains open grounds and a place of relative quiet. It is surrounded by mature trees and provides a peaceful oasis in the heart of the Valley. We welcome many and any - Trinity is inclusive of people of differing national origins, lifestyles, the lonely and wounded as well as those who seek just and fair Christian outcomes, based on the values our Lord expounded, practised and taught. Sunday Masses are celebrated at 7:30am (Low Mass) and 9:30am (Solemn Mass, with choir [except January]). Choral Evensong is held at 6:00pm on the third Sunday of most months. Weekday Masses are celebrated on Thursdays at 9.30am.

MARTYRS OF NEW GUINEA
2 September

Margery Brenchley, of this Parish and a nurse at the then Royal Brisbane Hospital, one of the 12 Anglican Martyrs of New Guinea (among over 330 martyrs of many denominations), as depicted in a stained glass window in the narthex of our church.

Collect of the Day: Living God, you made your Church to grow through the zeal, courage, and unflinching witness of your servants martyred in New Guinea: give to us and all your people such steadfast faith in your good purposes that we may serve faithfully wherever you have stationed us; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

FR GRAEME NAPIER KSJ
SENIOR ASSOCIATE PRIEST

It is a great joy to announce that Fr Graeme Napier KSJ has been appointed Senior Associate Priest in the Parish of Fortitude Valley.

Fr Graeme will conclude his commission as Rector of St John's in the Village, New York [STJVNY], NY, USA, at the end of September.

He will commence at Holy Trinity, Fortitude Valley, on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, Sunday, 4 October 2026.

Fr Graeme trained for the Priesthood at St Stephen's House, Oxford, UK, and served his Curacy at St Andrew's Cathedral, Inverness, UK, 1995-1998. He served as Assistant Priest (1998-2001) and then Acting Rector (2001-2) of Christ Church St Laurence, Sydney, Australia. He returned to the UK to be Succentor and Minor Canon of Westminster Abbey (2002-10), and then came back to Australia to be Precentor of St George's Cathedral, Perth (2010-16). Prior to his present appointment in New York, he was an Honorary Associate Priest at Cowley St John, Oxford, UK, while engaging in a year's academic study at Nashotah House, WI, USA.

His ministry at STJVNY aligns very closely with aspirations at Holy Trinity. Both there and in Perth, he developed liturgies to link church and civic celebrations. With his expertise in music, he expanded the choral life of the church, built the music ministry to include commissioning of liturgical music by international composers, and co-founded the New York Gregorian Chant Project. He has developed community meals and expanded fellowship at weekday services to attract non- and semi-churched locals. He worked with the Vestry (Parish Council) to transform the parish hall into an art gallery, and upgraded the parish's shared theatre space, making STJVNY a lively venue for the arts.

Fr Graeme read mathematics, philosophy, and theology at Magdalen College, Oxford, UK, where he and Fr Rodney were contemporaries (and chapel sacristans) almost 40 years ago! He is a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music; a Chevalier of the Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller (Brisbane Commandery); and a citizen of Australia, the UK, and the Republic of Ireland.

Do come to the Sung Mass at 9:30am on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi - Sunday, 4 October 2026 - to welcome Fr Graeme. (The rite of Confirmation will be offered by the Regional Bishop that day.) Then stay for a celebratory reception after Mass to welcome Fr Graeme.

SEEKING SECTION PRINCIPAL SINGERS (paid positions)

Can you provide musical leadership within the Trinity Choir to support the continued growth and development of our music program?

Up to 23 musicians comprise the Trinity Choir, one of the largest church choirs in Brisbane, led by Dominic Fitzgerald, Director of Music, and John Rotar, Assistant Director of Music.

Principal Singers lead their own voice part as well as provide musical leadership that enables the Trinity Choir to perform with confidence, security, and excellence. They work with the Director of Music to foster a culture of excellence, consistency, and encouragement within the ensemble.

There is a weekly Sung Mass on Sunday at 9:30am (rehearsal: 8:15am); a monthly service of Choral Evensong on the third Sunday of each month at 6pm (rehearsal: 4:45pm); and a weekly rehearsal on Tuesdays, 6:45pm-9pm. The Trinity Choir is in recess from after the Christmas Day service until essentially the end of January.

There are additional special services during the year, and occasional weeks off.

The position is a voluntary one; however, there is remuneration of $9,000 pa to encourage excellence in musical leadership (paid quarterly in arrears).

For a position description, to enquire further about this exciting opportunity, and to book an audition, please contact Dominic Fitzgerald, Director of Music, at [email protected]

The positions remain open until filled.
