During Holy week at the pantry, a watermelon arrived. It was split open with a red wound showing.
Perhaps in some act of blind optimism, or as an expression of food rescue faith, its pieces had been strapped together with sticky tape.
Doubtful if it was any good, it was all I could do to not reach out to poke and prod and touch and test the soft innards.
Having been Invited by a ‘dis/trans/figured’ Jesus to do just that in today’s gospel story, ‘doubting’ Thomas’ response is;
“My Lord and my God.”
For the next 300 years that would be the title given to the Roman Emperor, made upon threat ex*****on.
Thomas instead attributes the title to the wounded Jesus and so aligns with the victim not the perpetrator, declaring true power looks like scars, not domination.
His faith was not perfect, not whole, but like a watermelon 🍉 hung together with sticky tape, it was still good; still enough; still given.
At Pantry people often come through our doors wounded, anxious, unsure if there’s enough.
And before certainty arrives,
before the questions settle,
before the fear lifts;
Peace is spoken.
May Peace be with you and in our world this Easter season. - Rev. Marcus
