This week at St. Mark's Ermington we start a new series called "Sojouners & Strangers". We start with "God's people - born of a Trinitarian plan". Such a mysterious sounding topic.

We will look specifically at Psalm 33 and 1 Peter 1:13-2:10.

Did you know...
Sometimes the most interesting history is that told by the every day person. It can offer insights into life during past eras. What may seem mundane to you right now, will one day be especially intriguing to future generations. The following is a snippet of a recollection by Jean Bradley (born 1915) in the publication "Carlingford Connexions". Jean was a descendant of Joseph Eyles. Her father was Alexander Eyles Junior.

"I was a daughter of Alexander Eyles, whose grandfather, Joseph, was a true pioneer of the district. I was born and bred in Cowells Lane. There were only three houses in the street, those of the Cowells, the Hicklings and the Elvins. We were surrounded by paddocks and orchards. From the top of Marsden Road at present-day Stewart Street right down to Victoria Road there were only nine houses. At the top stood grandfather Alexander Eyles' home, now called Lauriston, a wedding reception place. In his back garden he had a flagpole in commemoration of the flagstaff there in the Colonial days when One Tree Hill was a signal station to let the Governor in Parramatta know of the arrival in Sydney of a ship."

This week at St Mark's Ermington we are looking at Psalm 1 another mention of fruit in the Bible. The person who delights in the law of the Lord is light a tree that is well watered and yields fruit in season. What does that look like for Christians today?

It is Granny Smith Festival week and so here we are looking at all things fruity and apples.
From the first mention of the fruit on the tree of good and evil in Genesis to the final mention of the fruit on the tree of life in Revelation, there are so many mentions of fruit in the bible. Here is one mention that deserves attention:

Matthew 17:15 - 19
[Jesus said] Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Christians aim to bear good fruit. Come ask us at the Granny Smith Festival more about this verse and many others.

Did you know...
With the Granny Smith Festival in Eastwood coming up this Saturday, 17th October, let's look at St Mark's Ermington's direct link to Granny Smith (Maria Ann Smith nee Sherwood). Stick with me here because family trees were complicated back then when there were so few people in the area. Everyone was related to everyone else.

The stained glass windows in our church are donated by the Stevens and Cowell Family. Martha Capon was the matriarch of this family, having married William Cowell and then James Stevens upon the death of her first husband.

One of Martha's daughters, Mary Stevens (grave in photo), married William Spurway.

William's brother, James Spurway, married Maria Anne Smith (pictured - Granny Smith's daughter) AND William's half brother, Henry William Johnston (see explanation below for his surname), married Sarah Smith (another of Granny's Smith's daughters). Both marriages took place at St Anne's Ryde.

Thus, it was that Mary Stevens' brothers-in-law cultivated the famous Granny Smith Apple after Granny Smith's death in 1870.
