This morning, our Elwood Shule community came together for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in support of the Cancer Council.

It was a truly inspiring and meaningful event, filled with warmth, connection, and powerful stories of courage and resilience.

We were honoured to hear from our guest speakers, Darryl and Elijah Goldman, a remarkable father-and-son duo who have both survived cancer, as well as Rachel Flitman, who courageously overcame cancer not once, but twice. Rachel shared her extraordinary journey, including her first battle with cancer while pregnant with her first child.

Their stories reminded us of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of supporting cancer research, treatment, and those affected by cancer.

Thank you to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered, and helped make this morning such a success. Together, we are making a difference.

Please enjoy some photos from this morning’s event.

Chag Shavuot Sameach! חג שבועות שמח

*Worldviews and ways of life in Australia*

ANU researchers are exploring how perceptions and ways of thinking (i.e. worldviews) relate to experiences and ways of living (i.e. participation and inclusion) in Australia.
They are seeking respondents for their online anonymous 15-20 min survey from any and all adult Australian citizens and permanent residents living in Australia.
Please make sure you are represented in this meaningful research by completing this fascinating survey and also forwarding it to any others who may be interested. There are $100 vouchers to be won if you complete it!
Access the survey here (https://anu.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0Ao5q9gu3ysrbVQ) in English or Tiếng Việt or ਪੰਜਾਬੀ or 简体中文 or 繁體中文 or العربية.
Any questions can be emailed to the researchers ([email protected]). Thanks so much!

Flowers left anonymously at the gates of Elwood Shule — a quiet yet powerful expression of solidarity with the Jewish community. In the face of terror and hatred, these gestures remind us that compassion endures, unity matters, and standing together is stronger than fear.

A message from Rabbi Gavriel:

Dear Members and friends,

It has been so heart-warming to see how many friends we do have. How many people have reached out to us and expressed their solidarity and support for our community. It has also been inspirational to see all the heroes and beacons of light amongst us. The CSG and Hatzolah volunteers, the emergency responders and bystanders who shielded, protected and tended to those who were in harm’s way.

At the same time, it is with great sadness that I try to share some thoughts with you all. We are all confused. We are torn. We are hurting. We are trying to find our bearings.

But we are also strong. We are resilient. We are united.

Innocent people celebrating a chag of light were harmed by the darkest forces of evil. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected in so many tragic ways and we wish them only comfort and strength.

Our first response must be to support each other and ensure those around us are ok. Explain to them that it is ok to not be ok. We all process things differently and their feelings, fears and confusion are valid.

We light candles to publicise the miracle of Chanuka. Yet at times of persecution, we are to light them indoors. What publicising of the miracle is there if it is being done in clandestine? The answer is that it is being lit for our families. We must begin to spread the light and warmth from within. Strengthen those closest to us and pass on the faith and courage we have within us. Perhaps turn off our phones during our chanuka lighting. Give those closest to us some undivided attention. Let them share their world with you, or you share with them some Chanukah thoughts and inspiration.

If you or anyone would benefit from a call or a visit, please reach out to me. My number is 0412 542 545.

We have endured a difficult few years and now we have this act of terror in our community. We need to be strong, proud, connected and continue to shine our light. It is a time for prayer and recommitting to who we are and what we stand for as Jews. May we merit to achieve some comfort and witness modern day chanuka miracles speedily.

Yours truly,

Rabbi Gavriel
