St Margaret's Anglican Church - Eltham

St Margaret's Anglican Church - Eltham Our historic church building has been wonderfully transformed. You are invited to visit our church and see Eltham's history along the way.

Who would have thought that when St Margaret's Church opened its doors to the community in 1863, our forefathers would have had the foresight to designate the back wall of the church as 'temporary'. This was done so the church could be extended when funds permitted. Then, one hundred and fifty one years later, the project to upgrade the church and then the mudbrick parish hall was commenced. The

renovations were completed and the new church was consecrated with the Dedication of the Multi-Function Centre on May 9th 2015. St Margaret's Anglican Church in Pitt Street, Eltham has served the local community for worship, special celebrations, weddings, baptisms and funerals. The upgrade has given it a transformation with an additional new worship area and modern facilities. Eltham was settled in the 1840s only five years after Melbourne. When St Margaret's was built the centre of Eltham was situated around Pitt Street. In 1902 when the railway station was built the town centre moved to its present location. A history of the church, set against the history of the times has been developed for the St Margaret's website. By 'liking' us on facebook you can see our journey and the transformation of the church and the mudbrick parish hall.

We are proud to introduce a new exhibition to our Transept Gallery called 'Art as Healing: Voices against Violence.' The exhibition is presented as a partnership between the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, Holstep Health’s Living Well Family Violence Group and St Margaret’s Church, Eltham. The artists featured come from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences. Each has been directly impacted by family violence, and many are survivors. Through their artwork, they explore themes of trauma, transformation, rebirth, and healing, offering a powerful message of hope — that resilience, strength, and faith can endure even in the aftermath of violence.

'Art as Healing: Voices against Violence' is on display until late June in the Transept Gallery. Please be aware that this exhibition contains themes of domestic violence and contains images which some people may find disturbing. Viewer and parental discretion is advised.
