Living in liberty requires learning from history. Apostle Paul instructs the Corinthians on how to:

1. 数算以色列人得享的殊荣

1. Count Israel’s privileges:
He points to four shared experiences of the Israelites. Not just a few, but everyone experienced these things. The first is divine guidance: “our forefathers were all under the cloud.” By day, a cloud led them. By night, a pillar of fire guided them. God guided them constantly—day and night. They simply had to follow Him. Today, we seek God’s guidance through prayer, Scripture study, reflection, and asking the advice of others – a process that can be rather difficult. But for them, it was simple: look up and follow. Along with divine guidance, there was divine deliverance. After centuries of slavery, God set them free despite Pharaoh’s resistance. God sent plague after plague and forced Pharaoh and all of Egypt into submission. Though Pharaoh later pursued them, trapping Israel between his approaching army and the Red Sea, God made a way. He parted the sea and miraculously rescued them. There was also divine leadership. Moses was God’s chosen mediator, through whom God spoke and led His people. The people followed and identified with Moses, just as believers are united with Christ through baptism. Paul adds a fourth blessing: divine nourishment. For forty years, God provided manna, quail, and water—even from rocks. Yet this care was not only physical. Already in those days, Christ Himself sustained them. He was present with His people, providing for their every need. He was the spiritual rock who accompanied them. These were immense privileges— divine guidance, deliverance, leadership, and provision. You would expect our ‘forefathers’ to express gratitude and joy in response. But that is not what happened. Verse 5 says, “Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert.” Despite receiving so much, they responded poorly. In fact, only Joshua and Caleb entered the Promised Land. The rest perished in the wilderness. Their bones littered the desert from one end to the other. What a disaster! What a tragedy! What a letdown!

2. 避免以色列人犯过的错误:

2. Avoid Israel’s blunders:
First, God was displeased because of idolatry. Not content with the high God of heaven who is enthroned between the cherubim and seraphim, whom no man has seen or can see, they decided to make their God visible, to bring Him down, to reduce Him, to cut Him down to idol size. Second, they fell into s*xual immorality. Near the end of their wilderness journey, they worshipped Moabite gods and were drawn into immoral acts. On the plains of Moab, they defiled themselves and ignored God’s call to holiness. Third, they tested the Lord. In Numbers 21, we read about the bronze snake. The Israelites questioned God’s care and deliverance, showing contempt for His goodness and challenging His faithfulness. They attacked God directly. Fourth, they grumbled. They continually complained against God, speaking against Him and finding fault at every turn. The result was judgment. God sent the destroying angel to take the lives of many of God’s people. What a tragic reversal: great privileges met with great failure. God’s generosity was answered with rebellion.

3. 留心以色列人受到的警告:

3. Heed Israel’s warnings:
These are not just interesting stories. They are not just past exciting incidents or ancient, terrible tales. They are warning signs, given to us “to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.” Some thought highly of their abilities: they believed they could handle food sacrificed to idols, enter pagan settings without harm, and stay untouched by sin. They assumed they could live on the edge of freedom without falling. And that mindset is still familiar today. People say they can watch immoral content on TV or at the movies without being affected, visit gambling venues without risk, or mix with worldly environments without compromise. The point is that no Christian should push liberty to the limit. Do not see how close you can get to sin and escape unharmed. Do not think that you can take on evil. Those who trust in themselves are filled with pride and arrogance, and they are sure to fall. Instead, face temptation with humility and dependence. Verse 13 says: “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand under it.” Paul reassures us here that temptations, tests, and wrong desires happen to everyone. If you are one of those people who insists, “I am strong, and I am never bothered by wrong desires,” you are lying. The truth is that every human being is a target, and every human being is vulnerable. So, be humble and admit your vulnerability! This is what our Saviour, Jesus Christ, did. As God, He was above temptation, but as a man, He was tempted In Him, we can stand, persevere, and reach the Promised Land. In Christ, and through Christ only, we can do so. Learn from Israel’s history and use your freedom rightly.

Paul defends his apostleship

1. 他的所需——他有权得到供养,但他拒绝了

1. His provisions – declared and declined:
An apostle is one who has seen the risen and victorious Christ, and Paul has. He has also been empowered by Christ, as evidenced by the fruit of his ministry. “You are the seal (the proof) of my apostleship in the Lord” (v. 2). Thus, he defends his right to this title. With that office come rights, including material and financial support. This principle applies broadly: churches should support their ministers. While tent-making ministries exist, they are not the norm. Normally, those who preach the gospel live from it. So, Paul has clearly established his right to support. Naturally, we now expect to hear him demand it. But he does the opposite. “We did not use this right” (v. 12); “But I have not used any of these rights” (v. 15).Why has he not used this right? Paul taught that although believers have the right to eat food sacrificed to idols, they should refrain if it causes others to stumble. Despite having the right, you should not always insist on it or exercise it. At times, especially for the sake of others, it may be better to forego it.

2. 他的传福音——他免费传讲整全的、纯粹的福音:

2. His preaching – free and full:
Paul explains that accepting support might hinder what he loves most. That is the preaching of the gospel. He knows some would accuse him of doing it for money or personal gain. They would accuse him of doing his work only to enrich himself. But that is not his motive. He says that whether he preaches willingly or not, he is fulfilling a trust committed to him. His reward is this: to preach the gospel free of charge. For Paul, it is not about money or material things, but about proclaiming the good news without suspicion or any other obstacle. Nothing must compromise or tarnish the glorious message of what Christ has done, is doing, and will do. So, although he has the right to support, he gives it up for the sake of a pure gospel. The gospel is not about enriching preachers, but about proclaiming Christ’s salvation—clearly, freely, and without distortion. That was Paul’s aim, and it should remain ours.

3. 他像赛跑的人——为了赢得人:

3. His program – winning and winsome:
When it comes to preaching Christ, Paul is free—no one can accuse him of hidden motives. Yet he is not entirely free. Though free from financial ties, he is bound to one purpose: “to win as many as possible” (v. 19). He calls himself a slave to this goal. In verses 19–22, the word “win” appears repeatedly—this defines his mission. In short, “I have become all things to all men, so that by all possible means I might save (“win” has become “save”) some.” (v. 22). The apostle Paul wins to save. This also offers practical lessons for evangelism. First, never come across in a conceited manner. Second, always look for common ground between yourself and your hearers. Third, respect those you are talking to and dealing with. Fourth, acquaint yourself with their culture, their outlooks, and their needs. And fifth, pray for openings to bring the gospel message. The gospel must go out, and Paul shows how we, too, can be involved. Evangelism is not for a few—it is the calling of every Christian. It is part of our gratitude to God. It proves that we really are thankful followers of Christ.

4. His prize – living and lasting:
When we live this way, we enter what you might call spiritual athletics. Paul ends the chapter with the image of a race: the Christian life begins when we are won over to Christ, and the running continues without pause. It involves ongoing discipline, effort, and a call to holiness. It is a focused life aimed at honouring Christ and winning others for Him and for His Kingdom.So, “run in such a way as to get the prize” (1 Cor. 9:24). This is an apostleship worth defending, a gospel worth spreading, a life worth living, and a prize worth winning.

1. 使徒保罗说到了知识:

1. The apostle Paul speaks about knowledge:
The issue in Corinth centred whether Christians could eat meat that had been sacrificed to idols. The church faced serious division. Some believers argued that this meat was spiritually defiled and must never be eaten, whether bought in the market or served at temple feasts, because of its connection to pagan worship. For them, it was completely off-limits. On the other side were those who argued, “We are free in Christ. Idols are nothing—they do not exist or matter. So, there is no reason not to eat this meat or attend these banquets. Why follow pagan superstition? Buy the meat, cook it, and enjoy it. This food is not an issue with God.” The result was a divided church—eaters versus non-eaters—and a highly sensitive issue causing conflict among believers. For Paul, true maturity means both right thinking and right living. Faith is not just intellectual but relational—it considers others. You may be correct in what you know, yet wrong in how you apply it. So, the real question is: what are you doing with your knowledge? Are you using it to build others up or to elevate yourself?

2. 使徒保罗说到了自由:

2. The apostle Paul speaks about liberty:
While the first part of the chapter focuses on knowledge, verses 4–7 deal with liberty. Paul agrees that those who have knowledge are correct: idols are nothing, there is one God, God the Father is the source of all, and Jesus our Lord is the mediator of all. So, technically and theologically, in itself, eating meat sacrificed to idols is not wrong. However, that is not the whole picture. Some believers are so used to idols that eating such meat still feels sinful to them. They see it as defiled. No matter what they are told, they cannot shake their conscience. For such believers, acting against their conscience brings guilt and inner conflict. Paul’s point is clear: if you lead a weaker brother or sister to violate their conscience, you are a harm rather than a help to them. You are abusing your liberty if you cause a weaker believer to do something that they believe in their hearts to be wrong.

3. 使徒保罗说到了良心:

3. The apostle Paul speaks about conscience:
You may feel free to do something, but if it leads another into sin, you are at fault. Exercising liberty at the expense of another’s conscience is sin. You must not ignore a weaker believer’s vulnerability, and, in this way, contribute to the fall of a brother or sister for whom Christ has died. We do not put others in harm’s way. Just as you would not give a child a lighter or alcohol to an alcoholic, you should not lead a fellow believer into what they believe is sin. Therefore, never cause someone to act against their conscience. Do not become a stumbling block. Your freedom must not harm others.

4. 使徒保罗说到了爱:

4. The apostle Paul speaks about love:
Paul says love must govern everything. “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” Paul also adds, “But the man who loves God is known by God.” Our knowledge must always be guided by love. That is why Paul concludes: if his eating causes a brother to fall, he will never eat meat again. This is love in action. It is a willingness to give up one’s rights for the sake of another, no matter how good the meat tastes. If it causes my brother or sister to fall, I will give it up!This is what it means to be regulated by love. If practised this way by everyone, it would have a great impact both in the church and its witness to the world. As Jesus taught, people will recognise His disciples not by knowledge or correctness alone, but by their love for one another. Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13: 34-35) Jesus did not say that we will be known as His disciples by our knowledge of His Word, or by the correct theological formulations, or by the amount of time we spend praying. All these things may be valuable, but they are not what attracts others to Christ. Is knowledge our main goal—through preaching, teaching, and study—or is there more? Paul reminds us there must be more. Knowledge must express itself in love. Right doctrine requires right application; truth must be handled with care. Follow the way of the Triune God – of the Father, who sends His Son out of love, of the Son who gives His life as a supreme demonstration of love, and of the Spirit who teaches the church how to love.

1. 不可离婚:

1. Marriage separation rejected:
To married believers, he commands that the wife should not separate from her husband and the husband should not divorce his wife. They are to remain faithful, showing patience and perseverance. They are to work through difficulties, and build on their shared resources: the Word of God and the Spirit of God. They are to make the most of their commitment to Christ. When believers divorce unscripturally, Paul says they must either remain unmarried or be reconciled. They have no right to marry someone else. The Lord Jesus teaches that unchastity breaks the marriage bond, giving the innocent spouse grounds for divorce and freedom to remarry. But if someone divorces for other reasons and remarries, they commit adultery and are guilty of unfaithfulness to their covenant. Thus, only unchastity can dissolve a marriage between believers. This makes careful preparation essential to avoid problems in marriage. Marriage is for life, so couples should avoid sudden marriages or hasty marriages due to a pregnancy before marriage. Couples should build a strong Christian foundation for their future life together. They should do this through prayer, discussions about hopes and expectations, and a shared commitment to serving the Lord. What they prepare before marriage must be worked out in marriage. Marriage should become a living, loving, caring, understanding, and faithful relationship. It should be marked by leadership and submission, and faithfulness and dependence. Simply living together is not enough. Some couples coexist without love or unity, yet assume their marriage is Christian because they avoid divorce. That misses the point. Jesus taught that marriage is for union, love, companionship, harmony, and dedication.

2. 一方信主、一方不信主的离婚原则:

2. Marriage co-operation directed:
Paul teaches that if an unbelieving spouse is willing to stay, the believer must not divorce. In Corinth, these couples had been unbelievers, but then one of them came to the Christian faith, while the other did not. Some members in the church urged separation, fearing spiritual defilement if they remained with an unbeliever. They thought these people would pollute their relationship with the Lord. Paul rejects this. He says, “No! Do not divorce!” He explains that the unbelieving spouse is “sanctified” through the believer—not inwardly changed but set apart by the relationship. The unbelieving spouse has a new position because of the believing spouse. The same applies to their children. They are not unclean but “holy,” because the unbelieving partner is consecrated by the believing spouse. The word ‘holy’ means they belong to God’s covenant community, the church, because one parent is a believer. Therefore, believers need not fear defilement and must not seek divorce in such cases. Instead, they are to remain faithful and love their spouse. They must bear witness through their conduct. They must exert their influence and their piety in a considerate but uncompromising way. Divorce in these situations is not an option for the believing spouse.

3. 可以中止婚姻的特殊情形:

3. Marriage termination accepted:
In verses 15–16, he addresses another case: when an unbelieving spouse wants to leave. The believer is not to resist. “Let them depart,” he says—indeed, it is a command. In such cases, the believer is “not bound,” meaning he or she is no longer tied to the marriage. If the unbeliever divorces, the believer must let them go. The marriage is dissolved, and the believer is free—either to remain single or to remarry. This is the teaching of Paul and of Holy Scripture: there are two grounds for divorce—s*xual immorality (adultery) and wilful desertion. Strictly speaking, adultery is the primary ground for believing spouses. It entitles them to file for divorce and to sever the bond. It also allows them to remarry. Desertion also applies, but in mixed marriages, when the unbeliever insists on leaving. The believer would always prefer reconciliation. The real answer is to uphold God’s purpose for marriage. When we marry, we should marry in the Lord and for the Lord. We must stress the holy character of the marriage bond. What will preserve our marriages and make them a blessing is not a law that says, ‘no divorce – ever!” Rather, it is a recommitment to the Lord and His plans for husbands and wives.

THE APOSTLE PAUL URGES THE UNMARRIED TO REMAIN SINGLE

1.这一催促的对象
保罗实际上是在对三群人说话:不在婚姻中的,寡居的和童身的。我们能看到这一点,是因为他用了三个不同的词分别指代他们。他先用了“寡居的”一词,指的是那些现在单身,但之前曾经结过婚,却因为配偶离世而婚姻中止的人。接下来他用了另一个只能译为“童身的人”的词,指的是从未结过婚,保持童贞之身,仍然是父母家一员的人。最后,他又用了最好译为“不在婚姻中的”一个词。这个词很独特,既不包括寡居的人,也不包括童身的人,是另外一群人,这个词在新约中总共出现了四次,都在这一章经文中。“不在婚姻中”这个词指的是那些先前结过婚、现在不在婚姻中了、但也不是寡居的人,指的是现在单身、却非童身的人。综合所有因素来看,“不在婚姻中”很有可能指离婚的人。由此可见,使徒保罗在哥林多前书第7章中,是在对童身的人、寡居的人和离婚的人说话,他是在给他们提出建议。他说:“我对不在婚姻中的人和寡居的人说,他们若保持像我这样就好了。”保罗对他们的建议很简单:保持单身,不要再婚,效法保罗的榜样。

a) the recipients of this urging,
Paul is really speaking to three groups of people: unmarried, widows and virgins. We can see that because he uses three different words to designate them. He uses a word which means "widows" and then he is thinking of people who are now single but who formerly were married but whose marriages have been terminated by death. He uses another word which can only be translated as "virgins" meaning those who have never been married, who remain chaste, and who are still members of the parental home. Finally, he uses a word which is best translated as "unmarried", and it is a unique word. It does not include either widows or virgins. It stands apart. It is a word which is used four times in the NT, and all four times in our chapter of I Cor.7. The word "unmarried" indicates those who were previously married, but are not widows. It refers to people who are now single but who are not virgins either. In all likelihood then the "unmarried" refers to those who are divorced. Hence it would appear that the apostle Paul is speaking here in I Cor 7 to the virgins, the widows and the divorced. It is to them that he now gives some advice. He says, "to the unmarried and the widows I say that it is well for them to remain(or: abide) as I am." What he is telling them is quite simply to remain single and not to marry or re-marry. They should follow his example.

2.这一催促的原因

b) the reason for this urging,
"why?" There are basically two reasons. The first is to be found in v.26 "I think that in view of the present distress it is well for a person to remain as he is." Paul is giving this advice because of the precarious position that believers have in this world. For the Christian the time before Christ's return is always, in one way or another, to a lesser or greater degree, a time of stress and distress. It can never be a time of security, of peace and tranquility. There is always the Devil. There are always the forces of wickedness that have allied themselves to him and to his cause. There are always those who seek to persecute the church, to undermine Christian values and beliefs, to make life miserable for the children of God. The institutions in this world are passing away as well, and that includes marriage. Do not absolutize them and make them everything. Do not place your hope, your trust, your confidence in them, for what you see and touch and build will pass away. They will not last, because there is a better, a more secure, an eternal future coming. Keep your eyes on it and fix your hopes on it too. Still, there is another reason why Paul counsels remaining single and it has to do with the fact that marriage tends to upsets a believer's priorities. As believers we should be single-minded in our devotion to the Lord, we should always put Him first and foremost. But let us face it, marriage can and does make that difficult. When you are married you almost automatically become pre-occupied with each other as husband and wife. You relate with each other, you do things together, you plan things together. You get wrapped up in mortgage payments, life insurance, careers, etc. What happens is that the center of your life can undergo a very subtle but real transformation. As Paul says, you begin to live for each other. It is no longer God first and marriage second, but it becomes marriage first and God second.

3.这一催促所蕴含的警告
当神设立婚姻制度的时候,他是把婚姻定为美好之事的。婚姻现如今之所以会有种种压力和张力,是因为我们是堕落犯罪的人,又生活在堕落犯罪的世界中。因着同样的原因,单身的人也不应过分乐观。保罗是在建议那些虽然单身,却没有禁欲的人结婚。在那时的哥林多,有些信徒会去找庙妓,他们选择了单身的生活方式,实际上却没有禁欲,放肆地进行婚外性行为。保罗是在对这样的人发出警告之言。这些人必须认识到,他们的行为不蒙神喜悦。神命定性行为只能在婚姻之内发生,不能在其他任何情况下发生。因为神绝不容忍这样的淫乱行为。正是因为这个原因,保罗才说“结婚总比被煎熬好”。这里的“煎熬”指的不是欲望之火,而是地狱之火。而且新约的其他地方在用到这个词时,也从来都不是指人的欲望,而几乎总是指烈火和审判。因此我们必须说,保罗在这里对哥林多信徒的警告,不仅仅是警告他们要约束欲望,而且也警告他们一个事实:若不约束欲望和不洁的性行为,神的震怒必焚毁他们。保罗在两千年前发的这个警告,至今仍然是有效的。我们生活的时代,几乎可以容忍一切,但这并不意味着神也容忍一切。我们生活的时代,人类的道德标准在不断改变,但这并不意味着神的标准也在不断改变。神从不改变,他恨恶婚前性行为,因为那破坏了人对婚姻的预备。神恨恶婚外性行为,因为那破坏了婚姻本身。你们单身的人是怎样做的?有没有满口脏话,淫秽书籍和影像资料不离手?是容忍还是抵制它们?要知道,它们会扭曲你们的思想、攻击你们的价值观。你们与异性来往的时候也要非常小心,因为虽然世俗世界对贞洁看得很轻,但神却看得很重。让我们都认清自己的恩赐,且尊重神对每个人的不同恩赐吧。让我们好好使用自己的恩赐,用它们来荣耀神的名,来让周围的人得福乐吧。

c) the warning in this urging.
When the Lord fashioned the institution of marriage He fashioned a beautiful thing, but a thing that undergoes stresses and strains because of the fallen people we are and the fallen world we live in. By the same token, singleness should not lead to excessive optimism either. Paul counsels marriage for those who are single but who are not living a celibate life. In Corinth there were believers who were visiting the temple prostitutes. They were opting for the single life, but not for the single celibate life. They were fully engaged in extra-marital s*x. Yes, and now to such people he comes with a word of warning. They must realize that their conduct displeases the Lord. He has ordained s*xual relations for the marriage state, not for anything else. For God does not tolerate the immoral. Yes, and it is now in light of this that Paul says that "it is better to marry than to burn." That burning does not refer to passion, it refers to hell. As a matter of fact, nowhere in the NT does the word used here for burn ever refer to human emotions. It almost always has reference to fire and to judgment. And so we must say that Paul is here warning the believers in Corinth not just about their passions but about the fact that if they do not rein in their passions and their practices God's wrath will consume them. Yes, and that warning issued ages ago is still valid. We may live in a day and an age when almost everything is tolerated, but that does not mean that God tolerates all things. We may live in a time when human standards of morality are changing, but that does not mean that God's standard is in a state of flux. Not at all. He detests pre-marital s*x because it undermines one's preparation for marriage. He detests extra-marital s*x because it shatters the bond of marriage. You who are single, how do you walk? Filthy language, filthy books, filthy TV programs - what do you do with them? Tolerate them or resist them? Realize that they will warp your minds and attack your values. Beware too how you act with members of the opposite s*x. The world places very little value on chastity, but God esteems it highly. Let us together recognize our gifts. Let us respect the diversity of God's gifts as they are manifested among us. And let us use them, use them to His glory and to the well-being of others.
