Holy Trinity
โ๏ธ THE SHIELD OF THE HOLY TRINITY ๐ก๏ธ
Understanding the Trinity Diagram
โจ If you saw my previous post โHOLY TRINITY IS SCRIPTURAL,โ we reflected on how the doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity is clearly revealed in Sacred Scripture.
๐ค But many still ask:
โHow can God be One and yet Three?โ
โDo Christians worship three gods?โ
โHow can the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all be God?โ
As we prepare for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity this Sunday (May 31, 2026), let us go deeper in understanding this beautiful mystery of our faith through an ancient theological diagram known as the โShield of the Trinityโ (Scutum Fidei).
While the Holy Trinity is a divine mystery beyond full human understanding, God has revealed enough for us to truly know Him โ not perfectly, but genuinely.
๐ก๏ธ Why is it called the โShield of the Trinityโ?
The word Scutum Fidei means โShield of Faith.โ
It is called a shield because this diagram serves as a spiritual and doctrinal protection against misunderstandings and false teachings about God.
Just as a shield protects a soldier in battle, this theological diagram helps defend the true Christian understanding of the Holy Trinity.
It protects us from common misunderstandings such as:
โ โChristians worship three gods.โ
โ โThe Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are just one Person changing roles.โ
โ โJesus is not truly God.โ
โ โThe Holy Spirit is only a force or energy.โ
Instead, this โshieldโ protects the truth revealed in Sacred Scripture:
โจ ONE GOD IN THREE DIVINE PERSONS โจ
At the center of the diagram is the word:
โจ GOD โจ
This reminds us of a fundamental truth:
THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD
โHear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.โ
โ Deuteronomy 6:4 ๐
Catholics do not worship three gods. Christianity has always been strictly monotheistic.
The three outer circles represent the Three Divine Persons:
๐ The Father
โ๏ธ The Son (Jesus Christ)
๐๏ธ The Holy Spirit
Notice carefully that each Person is connected to GOD with the word:
โISโ
Meaning:
๐ The Father IS God
โ๏ธ The Son IS God
๐๏ธ The Holy Spirit IS God
Sacred Scripture clearly reveals this truth:
๐ The Father is God
๐ Jesus Christ is God (John 1:1, John 20:28)
๐ The Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3โ4)
Yet the diagram also protects us from confusion.
Notice the lines connecting the Three Divine Persons to one another. They say:
โIS NOTโ
Meaning:
๐ The Father IS NOT the Son
โ๏ธ The Son IS NOT the Holy Spirit
๐๏ธ The Holy Spirit IS NOT the Father
The Three Divine Persons are distinct, yet never divided.
This means:
โ Not three gods
โ Not one person pretending to be three
But rather:
โ
ONE Divine Essence
โ
THREE Distinct Divine Persons
This truth is beautifully revealed during the baptism of Jesus:
๐ The Father speaks from Heaven
โ๏ธ The Son is baptized
๐๏ธ The Holy Spirit descends like a dove
(Matthew 3:16โ17)
The Holy Trinity is not a contradiction โ it is a divine mystery revealed by God Himself.
The Father is God.
The Son is God.
The Holy Spirit is God.
Yet there is only ONE GOD. โ๏ธ
๐ Reflection
The mystery of the Holy Trinity reminds us that God is not solitude, but eternal love and communion.
โค๏ธ The Father eternally loves the Son.
โค๏ธ The Son eternally loves the Father.
โค๏ธ The Holy Spirit is the bond of divine love.
๐๏ธ And through Baptism, we are invited into this divine relationship.
Every time we make the Sign of the Cross, let us remember:
We belong to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. โ๏ธ
May the Holy Trinity strengthen our faith, deepen our love for God, and guide us always in truth.โค๏ธโ๐ฅ
