Last year, farmers across the state were facing one of the driest periods on record.

The Presbytery of Southern SA, with the help of Synod from the Disaster Relief Fund, worked with rural congregations to help our communities suffering from the impact of the ongoing drought.

Partnering with local Uniting churches, the Presbytery ran a series of barbeques for farmers and those affected in rural areas, as an opportunity to meet, share struggles, and be in community with one another.

80 people attended the first event at Meningie in early August, followed by another 80 at an event in Murray Bridge a fortnight later.

This ๐—”๐—ก๐—ญ๐—”๐—– ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜†, Army Chaplain and Uniting Church Minister Rev Matthew Stuart offers a prayer of lament and hope:

โ€œWe remember those who served defending freedom,
their bravery and dedication,
their commitment and humour,
their resourcefulness and hope.

We remember sailors, soldiers and aviators
and their loved ones who suffered
in times of quietness.

Some of us remember the sounds of battlefields,
the hopelessness of defeat, and the poverty of captivity.

We remember those buried in foreign shores
who paid the ultimate sacrifice for peace.

We remember Australians from Albany to Atherton,
from Balmain to Burnie,
from Geelong to Gawler.

We remember sons and daughters,
husbands and wives,
fathers and mothers who served in times of war.

Lord, we remember,
we honour,
and we are grateful to them.

May we strive for peace
in your name, Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen.โ€

Since 1994, the Uniting Church has walked in Covenant with the UAICC - Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress, committing ourselves to a just nation.

The Day of Mourning invites us to reflect on the dispossession and ongoing injustices experienced by Australiaโ€™s First Peoples, to acknowledge our shared history, and to renew our commitment to justice, healing and reconciliation.

Resources for the 2026 Day of Mourning are now available, with reflections from UCA President Rev Charissa Suli and UAICC National Co-Chair Rev Ken Sumner. See the Comments section below for the download link.
