The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast that Cyclone Fina is expected to pass near Darwin central as a Category 2 system on Sunday morning, 23 November 2025.

Blessings for Today 6/06/2025
We would continue to talk about our election, and as we do, let us recognise the riches of God’s grace and let us praise Him for His grace-fully revealed to us in Christ. Christ Jesus is the embodiment of God’s grace.

Consider Ephesian 1:3-14, for instance. Willian G. MacDonald beautifully described this to us, and I quote:

“in Christ” …every spiritual blessing descends v.3
“in Him” ...the church was chosen before creation v.4
“through Jesus Christ” …the church was predestined to adoption v.5
“in the One he loves” …the church was given glorious grace v.6
“in Him” …the church was redeemed by blood in grace v.7
“in Christ” …God’s purpose and will were manifested v.9
“even (in) Christ” …all heaven and earth were brought together “under one head” v.10
(in him) …Gr. (included in the reference above) v.10
“in him” …the church was predestined in God’s plan v.11
“in Christ” …the Christian hope is centred v.12
“in Christ” …the church was saved as it heard the gospel v.13
“in him’…the believers are sealed with the Spirit v.13

As we can see, all spiritual blessings came through Jesus. I never cease to be amazed of God’s grace. I cannot help, but worship Him, praise Him, love Him, obey Him. When I close my eyes to sleep-I thank Him and when I wake up in the morning or in the middle of the night to do my devotional reading, I thank Him for the riches of His grace, for giving me salvation that is so rich and free. All by grace and by grace alone through faith alone. God offered, and I received.

Blessings for Today 28/02/2025
It has been mentioned in the previous ‘Blessings’ that the tears of Jesus are the guarantee of the ‘purity’ of the doctrine of election. It is not my intention here to rekindle hated debates or open up old wounds concerning controversial issues such as: predestination. divine sovereignty, election, foreknowledge, free will, perseverance and many more. But we need to grow and mature. We cannot remain as ‘baby Christians’ for the rest of our lives. True, we need milk for our coffee (those who like it), but we need real meat as well. We must continue.

We need to flashback to the basics and essentials, but the call of Jesus and the apostles was to be grounded and to grow. They had a broader concept of discipleship. It is not my intention here (for the time being) to define ‘election’, or ‘predestination’, but perhaps you are able to work it out as we proceed. These terms are very juicy and could create debates and misunderstanding. Any definition has its strengths and flaws, I hope you are aware. But in order to help our thinking just start reading Ephesian Chapter one and Roman Chapter 8, specially verses 28-39.

I assume you are familiar with the Wedding Banquet for the King’s son in Matthew 22:1-14. This may provide a balanced approach to our understanding. Most of the religious leaders were impressed by Jesus’ teachings but still did not put their complete trust in Him - to the point of devoting their lives to Him. This parable is an illustration of how a person can choose his own destiny – either to accept or reject Jesus.

If you have read it, consider these words in verses 8-9 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. 9 Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’”

Many from the streets came to the wedding, but someone appeared who was not wearing a ‘wedding garment’ (not an appropriate attire), the King noticed him and said to him: ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Why was this judgment given? V.14 says, “For many are called (or invited), but few are chosen.” Is that scary for you? Or are you praising the Lord? You have to be sure that you are washed by the blood of Christ. Are you one of the elect? All by grace and by grace alone.

Blessing for Today 24/02/2025
Many years ago, I preached about the tears of Jesus. Let us read some of these passages. Luke 19:41-44 “Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Luke 13:34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!

Matthew 23:37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! (all taken NKJV).

In the first passage, Luke mentions Jesus’ weeping over the city of Jerusalem. The other passages clearly show that He grieved for this beloved city. Try to meditate on these passages. Why do think Jesus wept for the people of this city? Do you think He was moody on that day as He entered the city? Or because he perceived that people’s heart were hard as a rock? Or may be just a very superficial kind of faith.

The gospel writers showed that Jesus identified Himself with the people He was calling and expected them to respond—simply because He is the embodiment of God’s grace. Jesus never forced Himself on anybody, but showed them the way, never violated man’s freedom to choose. As a God-Man He understands our sorrow, grieves when we reject His call.

Thus, it is safe to suggest that Jesus tears are the guarantee that the biblical doctrine of election is pure. This means that this doctrine has no indication of random choice or sudden desire for others to be damned. Further ‘enlightenment’ will be in the next series. All by grace!

Blessings for Today 14/02/25
Again, please read Hebrews 1:1-4.

In the last two “Blessings” I talked about: God’s last word in communication and His last word in salvation.

Today His last word in exaltation. For centuries the Jews were anticipating for a Messiah that would liberate them from the Roman rule. However, Jesus made it crystal clear to His disciples that His kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36). Yet prophecy tells us that there will be a final victory - a final exaltation - then it will certainly be vindicated that Jesus would be God’s last Word. The final exaltation will be demonstrated when “the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout” (1Thess.4:16).

Paul also said to the Philippian church: “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.” (Phil.2:9-11).

Our text says that Christ was exalted following the resurrection when He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Heb.1:3). However, the final exaltation will take place when He comes back the second time and we will reign with him. Amen. Considering the context of our main text, let us read Hebrews 1:10-12 because it speaks of His exaltation: He also says,
“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
11 They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
12 You will roll them up like a robe;
like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
and your years will never end.” (NIV)

Heaven and earth will grow old, but Christ will roll them up like your old clothes, never to wear it again. Scientists introduced the notion of “second law of thermodynamic,” which means that the universe is gradually losing heat (all the created universe) and therefore is slowly running down. The Bible is describing it more poetically as most middle eastern people would say-that the universe is getting older just like the clothes we wear every day. They are worn out. Don’t be dismayed. We can take comfort in God’s promises about Christ’s final exaltation: “Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, 'The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever” (Rev.11:15).

Everything from the beginning is all about Him. You are to reign with Him one day-what a blessing, what an amazing grace! To God be the glory!

Blessings for Today 13/08/2024
Read Rom3:21-26
In his book Justification vol.1, Michael Horton quoted a well-known psychiatrist Robert J. Lifton, who pioneered in brain research. Lifton said that the “source of many neuroses in society today is a nagging sense of guilt without knowing its source.” And further explained, “rather than being a feeling of evil or sinfulness, it takes the form of a nagging sense of unworthiness all the more troublesome for its lack of origin.”

How can we be saved from this problem? Is the answer from within ourselves or from outside? Is this not a kind of question an average person would ask? Some people have issues which they cannot resolve. Unfortunately, a few of them end up in mental hospitals. Others would use a rope around their neck to finally solve everything. If we tell the truth from Scripture, some are not a “ready audience” to accept our message—just like the Apostle Paul he discovered that his message was “a stumbling block” to the Jews and “foolishness” to the Greeks.

Jesus and the apostles teaching exposed the guilt, sinfulness and death to people, but they also pointed them to Calvary and the empty tomb as the solution to their dilemma. Sometimes it is necessary for a person to have a “crisis of conscience” as John Calvin suggests, in order for that person to see himself inwardly and the beauty of God’s holiness and forgiveness. And it is for this reason that the doctrine of justification is a very important one to embrace and pass on to others. This doctrine did not “die” in the centuries prior to the Reformation but was not taught properly for various reasons (you have to dig in history to know). The reformers, particularly Martin Luther—used the term ‘rediscovered’ if I may—changed radically the atmosphere and religious system of Christianity in Europe. “The just shall live by faith” was their cry and message. And it is by grace alone!

Blessings for Today 29/5/24.
Read John 5:1-9 about the healing of the paralytic man.
When we were in Jerusalem we did a lot of walking. About 500 metres from the Garden of Gethsemane is the wall of the Old city of Jerusalem. Annie and I entered the city through the Lion’s gate (also called Stephen’s gate). During Christ’s time it was called the Sheep gate, because this was the gate where the sheep entered and were gathered together for the Temple sacrifices. Just 50 metres further was the traditional “Pool of Bethesda.” Actually, this place has a series of reservoirs and medicinal pools. We were so fascinated by this place and had to stretch our imagination to think about what took place on that Day.

This is where the story took place in our text. Our Lord knew this man’s history and asked:
“Do you want to be made well?” (v.6b).
The sick man replied:
“Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me” (v.7).
Jesus said to him: “Rise, take up your bed and walk” (v.8).

The result? He was made whole, took up his bed and walked. Jesus did something that was impossible, but also unimaginable. Thirty-eight long years of trying to be healed when an angel comes to stir up the water, but today is the Day.

There was compassion and power in Jesus’ words. There was no power amongst the people near the pool; there was no power to the people who gave alms; there was no power to the paralytic man himself. Only Jesus! Only His compassion has that power. The paralytic man obeyed Jesus’ words and he got the blessing. His weak muscles were revived.

We often talk about revival, but revival begins with God and our obedience to Him. Revival simply means renewed obedience. There are fake and manufactured revivals, because there is no evidence of the power and presence of God. Christians should be careful and test every spirit. May God give you wisdom and discernment.
