Blessing for Today 24/02/2025
Many years ago, I preached about the tears of Jesus. Let us read some of these passages. Luke 19:41-44 “Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
Luke 13:34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!
Matthew 23:37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! (all taken NKJV).
In the first passage, Luke mentions Jesus’ weeping over the city of Jerusalem. The other passages clearly show that He grieved for this beloved city. Try to meditate on these passages. Why do think Jesus wept for the people of this city? Do you think He was moody on that day as He entered the city? Or because he perceived that people’s heart were hard as a rock? Or may be just a very superficial kind of faith.
The gospel writers showed that Jesus identified Himself with the people He was calling and expected them to respond—simply because He is the embodiment of God’s grace. Jesus never forced Himself on anybody, but showed them the way, never violated man’s freedom to choose. As a God-Man He understands our sorrow, grieves when we reject His call.
Thus, it is safe to suggest that Jesus tears are the guarantee that the biblical doctrine of election is pure. This means that this doctrine has no indication of random choice or sudden desire for others to be damned. Further ‘enlightenment’ will be in the next series. All by grace!
