This weekend (๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐จ ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ) marks the annual ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐š ๐ˆ๐ง๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž, also known as the ๐๐š๐ซ๐๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข.

More than 800 years ago, St Francis asked that anyone who came to God with a repentant heart might experience the fullness of Godโ€™s mercy. That request became the Portiuncula Indulgence, a grace still offered to the faithful each year from ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐ง๐จ๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐ง ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ ๐ฆ๐ข๐๐ง๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐จ๐ง ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ.

An indulgence is a gift of Godโ€™s mercy through the Church. It is not the forgiveness of sins, which comes through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, but the remission of the temporal effects of sins that have already been forgiven.

As we celebrate the ๐˜๐ž๐š๐ซ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐’๐ญ ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ข๐ฌ, the Portiuncula Indulgence offers a wonderful opportunity to receive this gift of grace. It may be gained by visiting ๐š๐ง๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ก ๐œ๐ก๐ฎ๐ซ๐œ๐ก and:

โ€ข praying the Our Father and the Apostlesโ€™ Creed
โ€ข receiving Sacramental Confession (within about 20 days before or after)
โ€ข receiving Holy Communion
โ€ข praying for the intentions of the Holy Father
โ€ข being free from attachment to sin

The indulgence may be gained for ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฅ๐Ÿ ๐จ๐ซ ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ข๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐š ๐๐ž๐œ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ž๐ ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง.

Pilgrims are especially encouraged to visit our Year of St Francis pilgrimage churches:

Today, as we celebrate the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus, we give thanks for the grandparents and older people whose faith, wisdom and love enrich our families, parishes and communities.

The theme chosen by Pope Leo XIV for this yearโ€™s celebration is:

โ€œI will never forget you.โ€ (Isaiah 49:15)

May these words remind us that every older person is known and loved by God. Let us pray for our grandparents and elderly, particularly those who are lonely, unwell or grieving, and make time today to call, visit or share a moment with them.

Before arriving in Seoul, pilgrims will visit significant sites connected to the Korean martyrs, including:

โ€ข ๐Œ๐ข๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ž ๐’๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ž the burial place of St Andrew Kim Taegon, Koreaโ€™s first native-born Catholic priest

โ€ข ๐๐š๐ฆ๐ฒ๐š๐ง๐  ๐•๐ข๐ซ๐ ๐ข๐ง ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐’๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ž, a place of prayer and devotion to Our Lady

The pilgrimage will then continue to Seoul for World Youth Day week, joining young Catholics from around the world for prayer, catechesis, festival events and major gatherings with Pope Leo XIV.

This is an opportunity to encounter Christ, deepen your faith and share an unforgettable journey with other young Catholics from across the Diocese.
