Fasting and abstinence laws for those of proper age and health in the Roman rite. All households have reasonable rules and moderate disciplines to encourage participation, responsibility, and growth as does the household of God. Although Catholics may do more penance if they are able, the minimum fasting rules for laity are observed Ash Wednesday and Good Friday only. Abstinence from meat occurs every Friday in Lent. Those whose health, condition, or circumstance prevents them from fasting or abstinence are excused from food restrictions, but may do an alternative penance of choice such as prayer or Scripture reading instead.

The fasting and abstinence practices of Lent are a moderate imitation of Jesus' forty days fast in the desert which he undertook before the beginning of his public mission. Christ came face to face with evil and battled temptation to reverse humanity's rebellion and model for us the weapons to fight against sin and self-absorption.
