The Family of the Divine Word at St Joseph Parish gathered on Wednesday, 3 June, together with Sr Lina Njeim, to reflect on the “Vocation & Mission” of Jonah.
Sr Lina gave an overview of this concise biblical book, as is considered one of the most beautiful stories in Scripture, carrying messages of obedience, repentance, and God’s infinite mercy.
Although Jonah was a Jew, his prophetic call wasn’t directed to the Jewish people but to the Gentiles.
Sr Lina presented this reflection in five parts: the calling of Jonah by God, the storm at sea, the great whale, the repentance of Nineveh and Jonah’s anger contrasted with God’s compassion.
God called Jonah to prophesy to the people of Nineveh in Iraq, warning them of their evil ways and wrongdoing. Jonah rebelled against this call and fled from the Lord, sailing to Tarshish in Spain, as he didn’t desire salvation for Nineveh.
When Jonah eventually entered Nineveh, he didn’t explicitly call the people to repentance but he warned that within 40 days the city would be overthrown. He then went outside the city and waited, hoping to witness the Lord’s anger.
Yet the people of Nineveh repented, and God granted them forgiveness. God also showed compassion towards Jonah by letting a plant to grow and shelter his head.

We are reminded that God does not abandon us, even when people flee from Him, from one another, or from true selves. God always have opportunities for repentance, even to the wicked, because His mercy transcends all human limitations!

Bishop’s Message
3rd Sunday of Pentecost
Year of Prayer for Peace

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I am currently in Lebanon participating in the Maronite Synod, where the Maronite bishops from around the world gather with His Beatitude Mar Bechara Boutros Cardinal Rai to pray, meet and discuss matters concerning our Church and the Maronites throughout the world. I ask you to keep the Synod in your prayers, that the Holy Spirit may guide our deliberations and help us respond faithfully to the needs of our people.

I also ask you to pray in a special way for Lebanon, that the Lord will bless it with peace and stability. Amid the many challenges and uncertainties facing the country, we have recently received a wonderful sign of hope: the joyful news that the beatification of Patriarch Elias Howayek will take place on 25 July 2026 in Lebanon. Patriarch Howayek was a courageous shepherd, a defender of his people and a key figure in the establishment of Greater Lebanon. As we prepare for this blessed occasion, we ask for his intercession for Lebanon and our Maronite Church.

This past Thursday, many of our parishes celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi with Masses and processions, publicly witnessing to our faith in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. I thank all those who participated and helped organise these celebrations especially as we prepare for the International Eucharistic Congress in Sydney in 2028. May our love for the Lord in the Holy Eucharist grow more and more every day.

The readings of this Third Sunday after Pentecost remind us that God sees beyond outward appearances and looks into the heart. In the First Letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul teaches that the wisdom of God is often different from the wisdom of the world. In the Gospel, our Lord tells us not to be consumed by anxiety about material things, but to trust in the loving providence of our Heavenly Father, who knows our needs before we ask Him.

We reflect on this during this month of June, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus which reveals to us the heart of God, a heart full of love and mercy. We are reminded of the immense love Christ has for each one of us. May this month be an opportunity for each of us to place our trust more fully in the Lord and to draw closer to the Heart of Christ.

Let us entrust our families, our parishes, Lebanon and our Maronite Church to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

+ Antoine-Charbel Tarabay
