Today is the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary.
Catholics have often prayed the Rosary in difficult times such as war, at the hour of death, at funerals and vigils.
Formerly known as Our Lady of Victory, the feast day takes place in honour of a 16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe. Crew members on more than 200 ships prayed the Rosary in preparation for the battle against the daunting Turkish forces.

Today is the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
Giving up a life of wealth for one of poverty, he heard God’s call and went on to be one of the most venerated Catholic saints today. After fighting in a battle between Assisi and Perugia, Francis was captured and imprisoned for ransom. He spent nearly a year in prison — awaiting his father's payment — and began receiving visions from God. After his release from prison, he abandoned his life of luxury and became a devotee of the faith, his reputation spreading all over the Christian world. He established the Franciscan Order of friars and the women's Order of the Poor Ladies. He designed the first nativity scene and was the first man ever recorded to receive the stigmata, the wounds of Christ.
He was canonised just two years after his death and is the patron saint of ecologists - a title honouring his boundless love for animals and nature.
In 2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergogli chose to honour St. Francis by taking his name, becoming Pope Francis.

Peace prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

Today is the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows which commemorates the seven great sorrows which Mary lived in relation to Her Son, as they are recorded in the Gospels. Today we are invited to reflect on Mary's deep suffering:
1. At the prophecy of Simeon: "You yourself shall be pierced with a sword - so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare." (Luke 2:35).
2. At the flight into Egypt; "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt." (Mt 2:13).
3. Having lost the Holy Child at Jerusalem; "You see that your father and I have been searching for you in sorrow." (Luke 2:48).
4. Meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary;
5. Standing at the foot of the Cross; "Near the cross of Jesus there stood His mother." (John 19:25).
6. Jesus being taken from the Cross;
7. At the burial of Christ.
