Why do bad things happen to good people?
In this life, some things are explainable and logical, but some things aren’t.
One man who knew this only too well was Job. His story is a remarkable illustration of how bad things can happen to a good person for no other reason than living in this world and being subject to it. But it’s also a story about how much higher God is than us, and how we need to stop asking ‘why?’ — and simply trust Him and His bigger picture.
A true test of character is how we act under pressure or adversity. Throughout the entire book of Job, he consistently demonstrated his trust in and commitment to God, never blaming Him for the things that happened. That doesn’t mean Job enjoyed it — he complained bitterly about the state he found himself in! But there’s a difference between despising a hard time and despising God for that hard time, and Job’s strength was in trusting that God is faithful.
God Himself spoke to Job, reminding him that he couldn’t understand how the earth, oceans, stars and snow were made … so how could he understand anything deeper? The point being, constantly asking ‘why’ is not going to bring you closer to understanding your circumstances. Romans 8:28 reminds us that “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose”. This was Job, and this is us! We know that Job ended his life with abundantly more than he had before — a real fairytale ending. But what is waiting for us after whatever life throws at us is even better than what Job received. So next time you’re asking ‘why’ … remember: God knows the answer, even if you don’t — and He is faithful til the end.
