Hebrews 13:17 Obey Pastors and give them honour, so that they can do their work for the Lord joyfully.
1 Thessalonians 1:3 Honor those who freely serve, because a church doesn't exist without volunteers.

There's so much confusion in this day and age about the church. The church is somewhat of a logo of the kingdom of God, but it's so confusing.
Jesus is the builder of his Church, so we can be confident that the church will be fine (Matthew 16:8). This Church is more than a gathering, it is a spiritual power and boundary; the gate is in front of Hades, and the Kingdom of God is advancing!

1) Gospel-Centered (Matthew 4:18-20)
A disciple is:
a) Someone whoe follows Jesus - Not Facebook in the morning but "Face The Book"! Jesus is the original influencer, the rest are just copies
b) Everyone - fellowship with other Christians.
c) Fishing for people - remember to fish for the people that annoy you and pray for them.
d) someone in proximity to Jesus. Jesus sees us and when he calls us we should be close enough to hear him and receive his love and forgiveness.

2) Transcultural (Matt 28:16-20)
Transcultur is not about mixed races: it is about the fact that all Authority on Earth has been given by God the Father to Jesus.

3) Missional
Jesus commands us to "Go and make disciples of ALL nations... teaching them to observe everything" in the scriptures. Australia might be rich in prosperity but it is poor in spirit. We are called to the end of the earth, to the end of the age; wherever we go we need to bring the Gospel. Pastors aren't converters - every Christian is a converter.
The longest distance is from the head to the heart, so we need to bring the Gospel with us wherever we go in God's world. (Acts 1:7-8)

This is the second sermon focusing on the ‘P’, ‘A’ and ‘R’ of PILAR

1. Congregational Polity: A church is altogether a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), whereby congregations make decisions together (not singled out ‘priests'). From among the congregation comes pastors, elders and deacons, and also practices such as Church discipline (Matthew 18:15-20) and excommunication (1 Corinthians 5).

2. Autonomy of local Church: Every local Church is ruled by King Jesus, with no regional or overarching bishop or Pope. A local Church is a group of Christians who regularly gather in Christ’s name to officially affirm and oversee one another’s membership, representing Christ’s kingdom on earth through gospel preaching and gospel ordinances. Churches can strengthen one another.

3. Regenerate Church Membership: A church is made up of Christians who have heard the gospel, repented, believed, been baptised, and committed themselves to the membership of the church, submitting to its leaders, who are themselves accountable for faithfully shepherding the flock (Hebrews 13:17).

Why is this all important? We follow PILAR because Churches are called to be holy, to be faithful untarnished witnesses, and to serve Christ who is Lord and does not abandon nor leave us.

Para-churches come alongside other churches in what they do; these include Christian: universities, counsellor's, campsites, campus ministries, holiday clubs and a whole range of other Christian jobs and ministries. However, baptism is one of the things the Church does that the Parachurch does not.

1 Tim 3:15 calls the church God's household, and the pillar and foundation of the truth. So to answer the question "What is a Baptist Church?", we will use the acronym "PILAR"; PT.1 explores the 'I' Immersion, and the 'L' Liberty of PILAR.

#1 Believers Baptism by IMMERSION
Ulrich Zwingli, Conrad Grebel and Felix Manz, in the 16th Century, were convinced against infant baptism, that believers should be baptised after concession of faith; they then rebaptized believers previously baptised as infants - they were called the Anabaptists.
Since the 17th Century, Baptism has became more prominent but has often been wrongly portrayed as "adult Baptism"; Scriptures state that Baptism is for anyone of any age who repents and confesses faith in Christ. At the day of Pentecost in Acts, the Apostle Peter says that anyone who believed could "Repent and Be Baptised", and that the promise was for them and their children. About 3,000 people there were baptised that day!
The first baptist church was started in Amsterdam, after a UK church was exiled for opposing the Catholic Church!
'Baptizo' means "to immerse"; Romans 6:3-5 says that believers baptized into Christ are united with Him in death, burial, and resurrection to live a new life. Baptism is like a wedding ring: it is not necessary for salvation, however, it is a visible sign and symbol of the reality that it points to.

#2 LIBERTY of Conscience

Anarchy was the most feared previously - Protestants killing Catholics, Catholics killing Protestants, and state power being used to reform religious beliefs was the norm - but nowadays it is Tyranny.
Act of Religious Tolerance was founded under King William of Orange and Queen William of Amsterdam.
Roger Williams started First Baptist Church in Providence. His ideas of religious tollerance and "Liberty Of Consciousness".
Thomas Jefferson "Errecting the 'wall of separation between churchand state'... is absolutely essential to a religiously free life".

Romans 13:4 states that governing authorities are God's servants appointed to do good, maintain order, and punish wrongdoers. Likewise, in Matthew 16:19 and Matthew 18:17, Jesus uses the Greek word ekklesia (church) and outlines authority, community accountability, and discipline among believers; unlike politics, the church should never use the power of the sword.

"When you wash your face, remember your baptism". - Martin Luther

Jesus, without sin, was also baptised so that he would identify with us in our spiritual neediness. Luke 3:21-22 tells of Jesus' baptism, the Holy Spirit descending on him like a dove, and God the Father saying "This is my Beloved Son, who I am well pleased with". Baptism is a sign of our union with Christ: we are God's beloved sons and daughters, and with us he is well pleased.
