1. God's plan for a redeemer (vs1-5)
The Bible teaches us that poverty if fundamentally relational: the widow, the orphan and the foreigner are poor. And God has a plan for these types of poverty: (Deut. 25:5-10)

2. Boaz the faithful redeemer (vs6-12)
God is all about organized structures for helping those in need, and the Church primarily fills the need of relationships (Matt. 25:34).

3. Jesus the ultimate redeemer (Vs13-22)
Jesus is the ultimate Groom (Eph. 5), and He is the greater Redeemer, and we as the Church collectively are the redeemed Bride. Just as Boaz redeemed Ruth from her physical poverty when she asked him to, Jesus redeems us from our spiritual poverty with his blood, when we confess our sins and turn to him. (Eph. 1:7)

This is the last sermon of our series RUTH: The God Who Welcomes the Stranger // One of only two Biblical books named after women, Ruth is the Old Testament's cherished love story which points beyond itself to God's covenant love with his people. Yet there are many neglected subthemes within Ruth that are worth exploring. Join us at Regeneration Church (10am & 5pm) as we embark on a topical/expository hybrid series on Ruth where we will explore the following themes.

Ruth Overview - Women
Ruth 1 - Ethnicity
Ruth 2 - Gendered Violence
Ruth 3 - Dating & Singleness
Ruth 4 - Poverty

(3:1-11) Ruth was savvy: Ruth actively sought out an engagement with Boaz. Likewise Christians should strive to be savvy in seeking out a prospective partner, not waiting around for God. We can further discern God's will by His Spirit, by Scripture and by consulting with the Saints (fellow believers).

(3:12-14) Ruth and Boaz showed self control: As they slept together on the public threshing floor they did not sexually interact and Ruth left respectfully before dawn to avoid inferences. Today, Western society is increasingly promiscuous, and Christians must resist the urge to be promiscuous and accept the cultural beliefs.

(3:15-18) Ruth surrendered all: Boaz could not accept the proposal until another ‘rightful’ suitor rejected her. As Ruth, she, like us, must surrender the timing and the ‘right’ person to God, and not be defeated when dating does not work out.

1. God’s Provision for the Needy (vs1–3): these verses from God's laws in the Pentatuch reveal God’s heart for the marginalized and show that God’s people are called to create communities where vulnerable people are cared for:
Leviticus 23:22 — God commands landowners not to harvest to the edges of their fields but to leave grain for the poor and foreigners.
Deuteronomy 24:19 — Harvest leftovers are to be left for the foreigner, orphan, and widow.
Ruth fits three vulnerable categories: Poor, Widow, Foreigner. Boaz not only obeys God’s commands legally, but also generously and compassionately.

2. God’s Protection of the Vulnerable (vs4–9): A confronting statistic is that abusers in faith communities often offend for longer and harm more victims than those outside churches. The sermon argued this is caused by bad theology, willful ignorance, failure to listen to victims, and the rejection of helpful “secular” research, despite the belief that “all truth is God’s truth.” Boaz has power over Ruth in many regards, yet Boaz uses his power not to exploit Ruth, but to protect and provide for her. The gospel message is clear: no sin is beyond the forgiveness of Jesus, but repentance and accountability are necessary.

3. Under the Wings of God (vs10-12): “Why have I found favor with you… although I am a foreigner?” Boaz becomes a living picture of God’s care, sheltering Ruth like a mother bird shelters vulnerable young under her wings. In Ruth 2:19–20, Naomi blesses Boaz and identifies him as a family redeemer. Boaz exemplifies God’s provision and protection, but Boaz cannot be Ruth’s ultimate spiritual redeemer. Only Jesus can provide eternal life, true refuge, and protection from sin and evil - redemption we find through the cross.
